The vortec heads are different so I do think the intake will match up on the old motor.

The '88 is throttle body injected, the '98 is port injected, completely different intake and electronics. The '88 has a simpler intake, I just replaced the intakes (yes there are 2, an aluminum lower and a plastic upper intake) on my '97 Sierra and it cost me a grand just for the intakes, me and my buddy did the work. The vortecs need 20 more psi of fuel pressure than the old throttle body motor does, so your fuel pump might need changing. I wish it could be done, cause I have 2 suped up 5.7's from dirt cars chillin' in the back yard, and my '97 vortec has 245k miles on it.

Bootz, just look for a used Vortec 5.7 in junk yards. Hell try to find a good longblock and swap your intanke, valve covers, exhaust manifolds, oil pan, and acessories.
