Are they like snakes and other reptiles where they go into a hibernation state during the colder months Always wondered bout this because lots of lakes we hunt have seen gators in summer months but just mostly curious for Dog safety |

Mostly, but its not uncommon to see them sometimes if we hit a warm spell in winter. However they usually do not eat much, if any, when cool or cold due to their metabilism slowing way down. Just cause you don't see them don't mean they not there though.

I have been in a blind and there was a gator hanging out under it during a warm day hunt. I almost stepped on one when it was really freakin cold laid up on the bank when I was on my way to a deer stand. He didnt even move. Scared the shit out of me though LOL |

We see them all year long in my area,but as stated they do not bother the dogs once it gets cold.They just come out to catch a few rays when it gets a little warm and sunny.Teal season with dogs is a NO GO on my property. |

The way it was explained to me was that they dont actually hibernate, their heart just slows waaaaaayyyyyyy down. Like 1 beat per minuite or something, so they dont move much |

gators in the cold, dont have the energy to move much. i had one in my decoys on a lil mudflat and i kept smakin him on the back with my push pole and he wouldnt go anywhere. after really smakin him a few times finally a friend grabbed his tail and we moved him behind the blind and not once did he move. |

In January, we were coming back from the camp, and there was about a 10' gator floating in the calumet cut. It was freezing that morning. The guy I was with said that when it is that cold, they dont move. Sure enough, we drove to it and both picked it up and put in the boat. After about 5 minutes of us checking it out , it started to move around, we then rolled it out the boat. |

Alligators brumate. Kinda like hybernation. Their heart rate slows way down and they go to resting "mode". They feed primarily off of the fat they stored during the spring and summer months. They will still be there but not really seen at all as much during the summer. If you see them now, dont take your dog with you teal hunting. Just in case its still warm out, a dog is a fine meal for a gator trying to gain a little more fat before the cold. During the winter you'll be fine. Eventually you will step on one and it'll scare the chit outta ya. Had it happen to me last year. I was teal hunting with some buddies during teal season. Stepped on a little 4 footer and had to dry check my pants afterwards. |
