 floatation foam??
I am considering removing the floatation foam in my gd 1660 to remove extra weight and make more storage. What are your thoughts on it? Will I increase top speeds by much?

The coast guard, nsa, fbi, and navy seals will kick your door in at 2am to arrest you, kick your dog, and rape your wife if you take it out. Just sayin.....

 Re: floatation foam??
It is my understanding that the coast guard regulations only require the boat manufacturers to put the foam in the boats to be able to sale the boat. I don't think that it is illegal to take it out once you own a boat or else these fiberglass shops wouldn't be allowed to remove it from the flats boats which many people do. I understand that you run more risk of sinking your boat. Also there are several boats such as airboats that do not have foam. Not sure how manufacturers get away with that if this is true though.

 Re: floatation foam??
I removed it from my 1644 and it hasn't sank yet. It is a pain to get the foam out of the front but is well worth it. If you take it out of the floors you will need thicker aluminum cause the foam actually supports the thin aluminum that's there nowImageUploadedByTapatalk1372081008.730795.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1372081116.587640.jpg

 Re: floatation foam??
@godevil195, I'm no Dean Guidry, but I think you're right.... nothing illegal about taking it out as a consumer/boat owner.
I was just trying to start some sh!t.....

 Re: floatation foam??
I've been boarded by USF&W, Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries, USCG, USCG Aux, Marine Police, & Military Police. I have my boats courtesy inspected by USCG Aux every year. Not once has anyone ever asked where the vessel's foam floatation is located. Personally, I would not have a small boat without it, but I am just stupid that way I guess.
If you maintain boat insurance, that is where I would start reading the fine print. They'd love to catch you in a little loophole about altering the boat and reject a claim should you ever dunk your rig!

 Re: floatation foam??
I wouldn't do it, removing flotation from a gd carries the same penalty as removing the tags from your mattress, I dont know how they know when u remove it....they just do....
