My daughters have trapped me into committing to run a 10K January 2014 at Disney. We're doing this instead of the usual Christmas routine. I'll have to start training for this now in order to be able to complete the run. I can't even jog a 1/4 mile right now. So who's got some tips on how to get my ass going? I've run one 10K in my life and that was about 30 years ago. The most since then was a steady 3 miles twice a week back in the 90's. I'll try to report my daily progress on here and my facebook page. Maybe take some videos to document the journey. So there, I've done it. I'm committed. http://www.rundisney.com/disneyworld-ma ... nner-info/ |

1. Get your doctors thoughts. 2. Get a personal trainer. 3. Will me your boat; or, 4. Fake a knee injury at the last moment. P.S. Don't croak! |

Find out where your weakness lies. I.e. shin splints, knees, distance. Try to train around them and target them with the correct exercise or equipment ( don't skimp on the correct shoes). Get out and run puke run repeat. It will work itself out. Even desk Jockies can learn to fall forward in a coordinated fashion. I've done some 5 and 10k's and some tri/duathelons (short ones). All were fun no regrets. To damn busy/lazy now to do me again. |

Disney is about 25 minutes from Sanford. Drive down this weekend and wait until next week when Zim gets acquitted. Then go stand out in the street until the verdict is read....ready....get set.....RUN!!! Get you in shape real quick. |

The quick math lesson: 5K=3.1 miles 10K=6.2 miles Half Marathon=13.1 miles Tips: 1. STRETCH before & after each training run. Walk for about 10% of what you just ran to cool down and then do stretches. Your PT (not physical therapist) should be giving you a good regiment of stretches for running. 2. HYDRATE...drink lots of water. Especially this time of the year. Keep a glass or bottle of water within reach all day and drink it. 3. CREATE A WEEKLY TRAINING PLAN AND STICK TO IT. START OFF SLOW. DON'T OVERDO IT. You have somewhere between 25-30 weeks before the run. This is plenty of time. You can start by running one quarter mile a day three days a week first two weeks. Bump it up by one quarter mile every two weeks, in 16 weeks. You are doing 2 miles. From there, your body should be accustomed to running and you went at a slow enough start that you didn't pull, tear, strain, stress or break anything! You can either keep the steady increase or bump your mileage up half a mile every two weeks. Week before the run, drop your mileage. Decrease to doing 1.5 miles a day. Day after the run...go run another 1.5. 4. SHOES!!! GET THE RIGHT ONES!!! I cannot stress this enough. Shoes will make the difference in you running in pain or running in comfort. Buy running shoes from runners. Make the trip to Baton Rouge and go to Fleet Feet Sports. That's really the only running shoe store for runners that I know about. Bring an old pair of shoes with you. If you have already started running in a pair of shoes you just bought, bring them and get ready to buy another pair and use the first pair to get your wooden boat out of the mud! The people at places like Fleet Feet, Roadrunner Sports, Larry's Shoes for Runners (I think they went bankrupt) employ runners, train them on correct fit for runners, correct shoe for your type of foot. They will identify flat footed, over-pronating, under-pronating, etc. by watching you run, watching you walk, looking at the wear on your shoes. They will put you in the right shoe and it DOES make a difference. I have done marathons, ironman triathlons, endurance races...the biggest lesson I learned starting out was having the right shoes. I thought that high dollar pair from Academy was a cool looking shoe. It was the complete opposite shoe design that I needed! I ran in pain every day because I wanted to lose weight and get in shape. Told. Running buddy of mine that I was going to quit running because of it. He said, "it could be you have the wring shoes. Go to Fleet Feet and get them to check your shoes." Great advice! 5. Get a heart rate monitor and train with it. Learn how to use it and determine your heart rate "zones" and stay in them. It will also tell you if your heart has stopped! LOL. Seriously, heart rate monitors are really good to train with. Target specific heart rate zones in different days. Mix it up. You will see improvements. Good luck and don't let the excitement of crossing the finish line work you to the point of puking! (My trademark for finishing...could have something to do with sprinting the last leg) Sent using Morse Code from my not so smart phone. |
