Pintail-i agree about the video very good.. I grew up doing the same thing trawling,crabbing and oystering out of grand isle for 18yrs of my life. Best damn life every. But I decided to make the move to a different career for not just me but for my family and still get to do what I love to do being on the water.. Storms yea they hurt us but also some of the best trawling was after the storms which ment more money but more damage to our homes.. I think the biggest problem is the seafood getting shipped in from overseas thats what hurt us... now the oil spill kinda the same thing as storms happens all the time just not as big as the bp one to get the media involved with then makes it a world disaster..for insist did yall know we just had a another one last week? A few before that in the marshes... yea it hurt alot of the fishmen but the ones that wanted also made a lot more money from it then they would have made without it.. I know this cause my cuz made 500,000 from it.. he would have never made that in a yr with his boat its to small. Hell I almost quit driving boats to make 2500 a day in a 16ft hull. But decided not too. But it did its toll nothing we can do about it.. not downing no commercial fishmen at all being im one hands down and my family is still doing it today im just a part timer now, but sometimes you just have to leave ya close spots and go try new areas to make a living with it still. If I was to lose my job for good I would buy me a trawl boat and work my ass off to support the family and I know I can still make it but I like my new career being its a easy ass job. Ill never do something im not happy doing... |

Good video man,,, Sad to say, I was able to bring my youngest this weekend walk on Timbalier island just like my family did with me. Sad to see the island in the shape it's in, and to see the evidence of how to help stop it from washing away is right there! Right dead center of the island is a pile of rocks put on the surf side that now sits about 100yrds farther into the gulf. When I was a kid, the rocks were about even with the rest of the island. Easy to see that it works! Also, 19th canal is about to become another pass into the gulf! It will take one storm and its washing through! I just don't see how building mud levee's is better then just building the islands up..... Very sad... |

T chavin.. 19 canal you are right I ran crewboats for hilcorp in that field for a yr and watched that new outlet open up from the storm. .I ran our crewboat in there all the time to the platform and we had living quarters back there for a while.. they know they can fix it right but dont and spend the money on other things.. just like in grand isle with the levee cheap route and every storm messes it up and they wonder why.. Also the rabbits were thick there not sure how it is now but talk about good trips there.. |
