the first question is what kind/size boat you want to trollerize?

The first answer to all of your questions is Minn Kota.

All the rest depend on the size of your boat and the thrust power that you want.

The weedless wedge blade on the Minn Kota motors is awesome.

I've got a Minn Kota Edge. 12v. 40lb thrust.
Its the bow mount, hand controlled one.It yanks my boat around all day long. I like it. I bought it bc it was cheap (like $250 at Academy) and I didnt need much TM for my boat.

I know cash has an 1848. How fast can you get around with that 40lb?

minn kota riptide, 12v, 55lbs thrust, tiller handle
Works great all day long on the boat

Min Kota is the only way to go!

I got a 55lb foot control 12 volt. It pulls my 1848 at a pretty good pace.

No need for a 24 volt on any duck boat, IMO....

I rather tiller handle, but it seems like they offer more of them with that 52" shaft. That thing will take up alot of space that is not needed. It looks like like i really should get a saltwater series being in Pecan Island and on the coast fishing.

i've got a 12v, 40lb minn kota tiller that i bought converted to mount like a standard bow mount. Is plenty for my 17x54.

On my last rig I was running a 24v 71 lb thrust Motorguide. It would scream, prolly a lil to much for a 1754 but it sure was nice to have extra power when we were loaded down for bowfishing. All ill ever own is a 24v system.

got a motorgude 12/24 56 pond thrust foot controlled. I run it on 12 volt most the time sept when its windy I can bump it up to 24. Check out craigs list I bought mine there for a hundred bucks.

Shane, why a 24v?

Got a 55# MK Powerdrive, 12 volt. Hooked it all up the other day and wanted to see how long the new battery and TM would last. Put it on full power and let her rip at 2 pm and at midnight that sucker was still going. The next day I turned it on and 3 or 4 hours later it finally died. This is outta the water testing btw. But I think a 12 should do the trick with these boat, 24 is a little overkill unless you run that dude non stop.

Ok. Heres another question....

Why Minn Kota over Motorguide?

Author:  PaulDarensbourg [ Thu Feb 12, 2009 9:10 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Trolling motors

cause minn kota looks cooler

Post subject:  Re: Trolling motors

minkota is quieter and smoother than motorguide. 12v 40lb thrust is plenty for a duck boat.

Post subject:  Re: Trolling motors

also if you bump into a stump or log minnkota flexes cause of the composite shaft while the motorguide could get bent and stay that way cause its steel

The minn kota prop is thicker than the motorguide prop. My father-in-laws is banged up on his bay boat and my prop still looks new even after all the stumps and oyster shells it has hit. And as Capt. said the weedless prop is a lot better than the motorguide. My dad has a great white on his bay boat and it has been repaired to many times to count.
