Does anyone know have any yes or no arguments against getting a male dog fixed? He's almost 11 months old now but he stays with my brothers dog all day while im at work and he's starting to have a pretty bad problem with getting agressive over his food and toys. Even keep them separated while they eat but he still gets protective/agressive when the other dog walks past where the food is stored...i was thinking getting his nuts cut would help ease the aggression but worried about killing his hunt drive..also read that the low testosterone can lead to low energy and quick weight gaining? Anyone got any insight on this it's much appreciated |

I've never had one that didn't get fat and lazy when they got cut. I'd mainly try to keep him separated and avoid situations where there's competition over food etc. |

Weight gain is a product of controlling his food intake and exercise. Energy level is too. Food aggression, even after getting him fixed, will not be fun to correct, but that will help some. |

They eat separated but he still gets very agressive when the other dog walks past the food bowls or where the food is stored or every now and then when toys are involved. They are fine together any other time, and they do play together with the sane toys or same bone quite often it just gets bad every now and then. |

Haha when this option was put infront of me I really dont want to unless I absolutely have to. The food situation im not to worried about, that's easily handled my keeping them separated..my biggest concern is hes very territoria/possessive over certain toys and over my hunting stuff. Thats where i thought getting him fixed would help the most. After doing alot more readiing on this last night and today the conclusion ive come to is all i would be doing is cutting the poor guys nuts off...it wouldn't help much if any |

My lab is now 100 pound after he got neutered. Partly my fault from not exercising him as much. But I'm strict on his food, until he goes roam and steal bread from my neighbors Llama! LMAO |

My lab got cut at 4 years old. He has lost about 10lbs since and he stays by my side now and wont wonder off. Acts like a completely different dog. I feed him two cups a day of Diamond naturals and he stays around 73-76lbs |

You have to dominant a make dog. When you feed him take something with you and make a show of eating it in front of him and then give him his. Its all about pack position and he's a teen trying to find or challenge his spot. Hell I make sure if they don't listen or move for the kids that that get told |

You don't have to beat him within half his life, I just slapped him across the nose. tender spot. yelped a bit, came back and after a few pops, all was good. mans best friend again. |

Got three fixed males. 13 year old was done at 4. If I knew then what I know now I would not have done it. I think the vet gave me a BS medical reason to do it because of their personal feelings not sound science. It did not hurt his drive at all, his last season was at 11. He hunted 42 days on ducks and closed out his career at 11 years old with 14 days straight in Arkansas. I took him this year for his birthday and he dragged through the pluff mud as fast as his old body would take him. My middle one was done for medical reasons. He can't hunt because of medical problems but still has drive to fetch. My 3 year old came to me fixed. It may have had a little effect on him, I really don't know, but he still hard charges thru anything on real birds. None have gained weight because I control the food portions and change portions based on activity level. |

Neutered males will hunt just like any other dog. The dog is "food aggressive" because he thinks he rules the roost, more than likely he doesn't have any respect for you as well. He needs to learn his place in the house which can be easier said than done but at that age it should be easier. He needs to wait to eat, wait to exit or enter doors after you, walk even or behind you, not be allowed to jump on you or play tug a war. All these little things make him submissive to you which will make it easier to make him less food or dog aggressive. Sometimes a swift kick in his rear will get the point across as well lol |

I found if you get the entire family to work the basic obedience with the pups it really helps with the pecking order. From a pup I would split the training with my wife for the basics and he would get his meals by hand bit by bit after completing a couple drills...sits, stays, place, blah blah blah. I would also get random friends and family to run a couple drills with the dogs when I could. Id especially do this with my hunting buddies so that if for some reason Im not able to send the dog or whatever he will be ready to listen to them no questions asked. |
