Oil consumption on 2007 gmc sierra
I have been dealing with the dreaded oil consumption on the 2007 gmc sierra of mine for a while now. About every 2000k miles, I'll have to add a quart. No smoke, no drips, just low. It wasn't until recently that I did a search and found its a very common problem with the 5.3 vortec engine. Online, there was a few fixes that seemed to help. One is a different style valve cover for the left side that prevent the oil from being excessively sucked into the intake through the PVC. This new port design just about eliminated the oil consumption. There is also a plug in by Range that will prevent the active fuel management system from cutting cylinder from 8 to 4 which also aids into the issue. This was supposedly fixed on all 2011 - present.
Has anyone delt with this shit before? Does it work? The valve cover is about $80 and the Range is about $150. Not that bad, but curious.
Top pick is old style, bottom is the new style that relocated the port.

I noticed it wet, but not a drip yet. Thus I was looking online for oil leaks and such and ran across this shit. been readings it all morning and it appears it eliminates the oil consumption 99%. It all occurs when the AFM system cuts off the cylinders. cuts 1 & 7 and 4 and 6 everytime. And that oil port is right at one of the cylinders not in use.

My 2008 did it. Switched to the 6.0 in my new truck and don't have to deal with the AFM crap.

On a side note, the rear engine cover gasket is more likely to be flints leak than a rear main. When i get an ls with a leak i replace the rear cover gasket, rear main seal, oil pan gasket and timing cover gasket as a pkg deal. Ive have some customers bring in there trucks that just had a rear main seal replaced and did not fix their problem. Do them all at once since those gaskets overlap each other. It might save you some stress

Re: Oil consumption on 2007 gmc sierra
My 07 Silverado would burn a little under a quart every 3000 miles. Did it since the day I got it in May 2007 and it fell under what GM claimed as the "normal usage range", which is BS but whatever. Mine does not have AFM. Last year a roller on one of the lifters seized and started beating pieces out of my camshaft. So I called GM and raised months worth of cane through 4 layers of management and was finally told they wouldn't offer any assistance and stood by their product only lasting me 132000 miles. Cost would have been 4500 or so for new camshaft and lifters so I just put a crate motor in it for about the same price. I say all of that to warn you that the seized lifter roller can be an expensive symptom of oil consumption. I've read some things that said using an oil additive can help keep that from happening. Don't know if that's the case or not.
When it first started making racket, I walked into autozone, bought a bottle of motor medic (wasn't that exactly but similar) and some sea foam and put it on the counter. Guy goes, "let me guess, Silverado between 07 and 09?" Needless to say I'm done with 5.3 liter engines and most likely chevys in general after this one.

haha. damn, Mine did it from day one also. Just really didn't think about it. Just added a quart between oil changes. Now after reading, the oil consumption is due to that AFM system. Like you mentioned, its all BS. They didi it that way so they could fall under the new mileage standards by cutting off cylinders. So save on gas, but buy f'n oil !

I know of a lot of people that have been successful with the Range. I'd bet money that would fix yours.
