 Re: what outboard to buy?
I've ran two different 60 4stroke tiller mercs, very nice smooth running motors, sorry but i have no experience with anything else.

X2 on the 90 Yamaha. Its a beast and lighter than the 90 Merc.

 Re: what outboard to buy?
Joel my F90 you picked up for me has over 500 hrs now[ten months]. Not one hitch. Its a no brainer for me. I will never own anything but a four stroke and a Yamaha sticker on it. Yes they are heavier but the quietness and fuel economy out weigh the weight for me. Today Doc and I were on the river with his 18 Lund Alaskan with a two stroke 90 Yamaha. It runs good with great power but the two stroke smoke and noise were enough for me to be glad I went four stroke. By the way Docs rig is a 1991 and has 46 hrs on the motor. Randy

 Re: what outboard to buy?
2-stroke Yamaha. IF you can still get your hands on one. 2 strokes will run circles round a 4stroke all day long. Full mpg is not as good as the four. But parts r cheaper, easier to work one, and alot lighter.

 Re: what outboard to buy?
I had a Yamaha four stroke for about 4 years. Ran it year round pretty much every weekend. NOT ONE SINGLE problem. Great fuel economy, quiet, no mixing oil and gas. Hard to beat.

 Re: what outboard to buy?
My foreman is running a 50 Merc 4stroke and after using some of Danny's input in regards to the prop and pulling the restrictor out of the air flow, it runs out nice on his v hull lake boat up here. Previously it had a hard time with 2 guys and gear. A 90 would make it fly though.

i heard about the restrictor plate in the 50hp 4-stroke efi mercs.
might look into it. i know i can get a tiller 90 yami 2 stroke for 6200ish. at least i could last yr.

 Re: what outboard to buy?
if you can find a 3 cylinder 40 mercury those engines are hard to kill or a 2-stroke 90 yamaha but if you go with the yamaha it may be hard to find because yamaha only brought back 3 or 4 2-stroke engines this and the 90 wasn't one of them

 Re: what outboard to buy?
check out the niss or tohitsu. they get a bad rap because they havent been here for ever. the price used to be good and all ive heard from owners is good. if you look in other countrys they are a main commercial line motor.
