Got a wild hair recently and bought everything I needed to do taxidermy..brought home some extra sea ducks from my trip to practice on and I’d say things are going very well. For my first two birds, I am very satisfied with the way they came out. Learned a whole lot from just two birds...#3 is a Common Eider thats in the works currently, skinned and fleshed it today so I should have it mounted up tomorrow. (I know the bills arnt painted yet) IMG_0067.JPGIMG_0132.JPG

52 views and nobody commented :| ; this place doesn't get traffic anymore.

First of all if that is your first try Quack; to me they look great!

Of course I can't see in a simple photo what I would see up close in person. But, you already know what probably looks right on them and what doesn't because you said you learned a lot and this was just your first try.

This adds a whole new dimension to your hunting. As outdoorsmen, if we do alot ourselves it just adds another level of satisfaction. This takes your hunting to another dimension.

Not just anybody can do taxidermy; and do it well. And for you to have the curiosity and werewithall to try it I say congratulations.

Last couple years I tanned hair on the hides on several whitetails I killed and have some in my office and in my trophy room. I found out alot about myself when I did it. Alot of people were impressed with the outcome including me. I also found out, it was a tremendous amount of hard work. I don't think I have the patience and attention to detail to do any kind of head or body mount on any animal, but tanning hides I can.

It quickly gave me an understanding as well on why a good taxidermist charges what they charge for their product.

Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!

They look good for your first try. Use lots of reference photos and pay close attention to feathers on back and the secondary's on the wings. And always do your best to get them as clean as possible.

Thanks

I found that if I looked at a pic of how I wanted it, mounted it that way to the point I thought it was good then go back to the pic and pick out the minor details that I missed.

Im in the process of doing the Eider right now but its giving me some trouble...something just dosent look right on it. Maybe it’s because I’m just not used to seeing a duck that big. Ill post a pic of it when I get to a good stopping point.

My Eider for yesterday. I feel like I could have done better on it, but satisfied overall. IMG_0176.JPGIMG_0163.JPGIMG_0171.JPG

Just keep at it you are headed in the right direction. Use lots of photos to reference your feather patterns. Your scapular feathers are to far down on the body from what I can see in the pictures.

Thanks y’all. Im really hooked on it...I find it a lot of fun and very intriguing.

200plus, I know it’s to late for that bird now, but you mean they need to come up and tighter to the shoulders is what you are saying? I guess to do that I would just pull the back/neck skin forward?

I think he means placing the wings a bit farther forward on the form.

It is fun until it turns into a side job. Then you do not have time for your own. I have probably taxidermied at least a couple hundred birds, then it was no longer any fun. I have not done any taxidermy in at least 10 years.

Yeah I see what talking about now. And yeah people are already asking me to do some....I posted a pic of them on FB and got like 15 messages asking if I would do one for them. I don’t plan on it, just want to keep it a hobby thing for myself and maybe a few close family/friends

There are some top notch taxidermist on duckhuntingchat that will help you and give very thorough critiques on what is wrong and how to fix them. I'd talk with them but for my mediocre eye they are a good start.

Bird #4

Finished a green wing today. His left wing was completely shattered, fixed it to the best of my ability. I know it’s still not right, but that’s the best I could get it. I feel like this is my best one yet though overall. IMG_0199.JPGIMG_0197.JPGIMG_0196.JPG

Where do you buy the material needed to mount one? How much is it costing you to mount one yourself ?

Found some of my first mounts at my dad's house. They are 20+ years old.

Thought I’d share my most recent. Finished up this speck yesterday. My best one so far by a long shot. Still got some minor grooming details to work out, but overall I’m really happy with this one. IMG_0239.JPG

Kinda loses something with the tape and cardboard, but I think when the day comes where you don't have to leave that stuff attached, someone might actually hang one on their wall lol

Seriously, though, good job. Not something I have interest in, or any patience for, but definitely can recognize the effort and developing skill you're putting into it.
