Post subject:  2054 boat build

My buddy and I are contemplating getting a stamped hull from Pierce Aluminum and building our own boat. He's the welder and I've built plenty of things that were probably more complicated than figuring out how to create a functional bow out of the basic hull we get.

Has anyone done this and have any input on whether we're nuts to do it? Any pro's or con's on pretty much using the entire 20' hull length so we end up with a 2054, rather than cutting 2' off of it and making an 18'? I guess what I'm saying is we hunt 4 guys consistently and we could use the room of a 20. The plan is to put a surface drive on it. Not sure which one at this point. Thanks for any feedback.

Plenty of lessons learned on this forum. Get to searching. Expecting all the answers from your post would be doing yourself a disservice. There are some really experienced people that no longer visit this site so they won't answer you and some good images posted by those and other people.

Anthonyaarnold just did a post on a 20x50 he just built that came out real nice. Go check out his thread and reach out to him as well. I’m sure he could provide you with some very good information.

I run a 2060. used to run a 1754. When I was in the 1754 I always said I wanted a bigger boat. Now that i'm in the 2060 I've never said I wanted a smaller boat.

go big, power it correctly and you will be more than happy.

Yeah that’s true, I have an 18x48 and wish it was a 20x54 or 20x60

I have a 1748, have spent a good bit of time in a 1954 (+ hunt deck) the last couple years, and am completely happy with my 1748. It's all about use case and perspective. For my hunting needs (3 people mostly with 4 sometimes), its plenty of space and power isn't a problem (fully built Briggs on a long tail frame right now, used to be on a surface drive). If you arent certain what you want, go bigger. If you know without a doubt what size you need, then smaller boats can fill those niches perfectly.

I'd have a builder weld up the form of the hull and you finish it. The hull form is the critical part. If you screw that up then you have to start over.
