Post Camp burnt to the ground
Well fellas, this is not the kind of call you want to get on vacation. Apparently lightening struck our houseboat and burnt it to the steel structure. My best friend and I have spent over 10 years working on this thing and to have this happen really tears my heart out. The material things can be replaced, life can't. Thank god we didn't have a crew out there and no one was hurt. Needless to say I won't be rebuilding it. I had approx 40k of my own money in it and he had about the same. If anyone has any information regarding thus, please let us know. I truly believe that the fire burned too hot for it not to be arson. Some sort of accelerant was used. Only the steel structure and metal roof is left. When I get home sun, I'll be investigating the burn site. More than likely we will be selling the steel structure if anyone is interested in a project. The structure is 60' long. The camp was 24'x60'

We moved it from Bateman Island to Whitell castle about 2 years ago when we got out of the lease due to no birds. Didn't have insurance on it because we could never find anyone to insure it for a "reasonable" rate. Some quotes were as much as 4x my current house note. Needless to say I won't be rebuilding that one. Too much of my life and money spent on that one. I'll build a much smaller and cheaper "camp" than try to even consider rebuilding that one. We once had it valued when we considered selling and it was valued at around 70-80k considering all we had inside and out. I plan on riding out there when I get back in town and look around.

run of the mill structure fires are burning 2000 plus these days. a free burning camp fire like that would easily burn hot enough to melt anything and everything in its path. Judging by the pic, looks like a perfectly normal fire to me.

If you are in Louisiana, call LSFM and see if they have any dogs that need cert hours for accelerant detection, they may bring one out free of charge if so. My dog isnt ready yet, but if he was I would have been more than happy to help.

Sorry for your loss, this is why I am so torn on building a camp...

Already done that, they should be there tomorrow. Also got with the state and they have my camps coordinate's. They will be able to tell if indeed lightening hit that location. It's amazing the technology they have to monitor that.

A Good friend of mine just had his camp burn as well. They lost around 80k like you did. It was determined that it was arson and a neighbor with cameras caught two guys stealing things out of it before they burned it. I wouldn’t rule foul play out of the question these days

Actually got back from vacation late Sunday and haven't been out there yet. But one good thing is its good to "know" people in high places.

It was arson and not only did they do mine, they tried to do the camp right next to mine that was on the bank, but something spooked them and they left. Good thing is they didn't burn it down and left GOBS of evidence inside. I'm very close friends with the State Marshall and several members of the State Police. Due to the investigation, I have to wait to release the info. But I can tell you 16 State Fire Marshall detectives and 13 State Police were at the landing collecting all he evidence and already have 30 names of "people of interest" due to their lack of covering their tracks.

When I able to give out more information, I will so that others will be protected. Arson cases with an attempt on life carries a life in prison sentence. Arson with the attempt to do damage to property can carry a sentence of 20+ years in prison and $50k and up in fines.

If a prosecution is done, a court ordered restitution payment made back to us will be mandated in the sum of ??? ordered by the State Fire Marshall. All I can do is hope and pray that with the evidence collected, they catch these clowns.

Damn. Never understand why people do shit like this. You couldn't just loot the place. Broken window and couple grand of items to replace. Have to burn someones pride and joy to the ground in the process. Hope they get whats coming.

There are a host of crimes that carry very heavy sentences, unfortunately, the court system is very liberal and most of the time people get very minimal punishments for serious crimes. That’s just fact. I make arrests all the time for felony crimes and see the guy I arrested the week before out on the streets burglarizing the same streets he was before. The system is broken.

As far as restitution, I hope you can get something out of it, but the fact usually is that these guys who commit these crimes have extensive criminal records, no job, and already owe the state a host of money, so they usually take their time from sentence and never pay for anything.

I hope it works out for you my friend, but I’m not confident that it will, just based on my knowledge of the system and how things usually work

Yep plenty of info. DNA collected, finger prints collected, boats at very odd times the night it burned on video. 1 boat knew where camera was and decided to cut every light off so tht the video camera couldn't catch it, But the dumbass didn't realize his Vodoo exhaust was glowing cherry red and stood out like a sore thumb. The set up a Geofence with Google. Anyone who went into the area of the geofence with a cell phone will be "pinged". There are approximately 20 suspects and as soon as the DNA and fingerprints get fully processed they will start interviewing and collecting DNA from the suspects to do comparison analysis,

That's all I can say for now but lots more going on. I also have a former member of the CIA (who is a close friend) who did manhunts for Federal fugitives on the case. All I can say, was several GTR's at odd times were in the area the night it caught fire. "IF" the so called GTR boats are on this site, let this serve warning that given the amount of DNA and such that was found in the adjacent camp, that doesn't match any of our group, you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest of the law. Now, if the guilty party is not on the site, no worries, you should have been smart enough to burn the other camp down as well and not leave all your prints and DNA in other camp. Depending on what transpires, we will also be offering a $20k reward for "CONVICTION". But that will come at a later date.

In today's day and age I cannot imagine somebody being stupid enough to do something like this. With DNA and Trail cameras on every tree it takes a seriously stupid individual to do something this dumb.

I hope you get to keep their testicles in a glass jar above your fireplace when they catch the guys.....

Assuming you catch these folks...how does your camp get paid for? I assume it’s part of the court process and you sue them.

Just guessing that they won’t have the money to pay for your camp.

This sucks for you no matter how you slice it. Sorry to hear about this.

A state fire marshal has the authority to walk into a court room with the proper evidence for conviction and order court restitution paid in the amount of the value of the arson. Meaning, my state marshal can have court ordered payments or lump sum payment paid to me and he can do nothing about. Wages garneshed from his place of work. If hes broke, then it could still be ordered, but coming from different means.

Unfortunately, the usual suspects for these kinds of things have absolutely nothing and garnishing wages of a 10 time convicted felon who is addicted to opiates is pointless. I hope whoever did this has money so you can be reimbursed for your massive loss bro

It’s terrible that people can’t just have things these days and that other people can’t leave other people’s stuff alone.
