Re: Best Way To Learn How To Duck Call?
I started practicing 36 years ago. practice, practice, practice. Listen to the ducks during the season and during the off season to learn the language. Start with a few quacks and chuckles and remember alot of times, less is more.
Use the wind from your diaphragm and not your upper airway. Start out small with one note until you perfect that one note. Then add another and another until you get it down. I had 30 years under my belt before I decided to play with some competition stuff. I had to use the single note method to get a routine down and still have a really long way to go with the routine. I'm nowhere near the caliber caller Kent is but can ring a highball and can make a duck work the call.
If you try to compare yourself to Kent your gonna be lost. He practices alot. That boy is sick with a duck call. He produces notes that most will only dream about. and his methods are simple but take some practice to get the air right and he has some access to calls and tricks to to the mechanics of the calls that help alot.

Re: Best Way To Learn How To Duck Call?
Well, my wife surprised me and got me a Hobo ICU2 call and I immediately noticed a difference when I blew into it. It takes very little effort to make this call sound compared to my cheaper ones and my quacks sound deeper. Overall I'm very happy with it but have a lot of practicing to do.

DMD, here's a picture of the red head I shot using your decoy spread method. Redheads are rarer that pin tails down here so I was doing something right that day!

Dang straight dude, I smiled when I saw that. It's good to have a spread that will work for divers and puddlers, that's what the majority of our hunting is for, a mixed bag. Very glad it worked for ya, now you gots you another bullet in your gun.

Re: Best Way To Learn How To Duck Call?
Can you guys explain the difference to me in double reed calls vs single reeds? The one my wife gave me is a double reed ICU2 and I noticed that is has a much raspier sound to it than my cheap single reed but it starts sticking on me after only making a few calls with it.
Any tips on not getting a double reed to stick so easily? With my cheap single reed, I can use it all day and not have to worry about it sticking and this one that cost 5 times more sticks like crazy.

Re: Best Way To Learn How To Duck Call?
That set up that he use's is very close to what I use In tampa bay for diver's , only thing diffrent is I close the gap at the end off the deeks so they work the middle , I've tried having the end open and they sometime land out side of the spread and swim out but not all the time , when I closed it they decoys just right. It' doesn't allway go that way.

Re: Best Way To Learn How To Duck Call?
If you want to kill those late season ringers that don't want decoy , use a layout boat and it's all over nobody hardly ever does this , late in the season , allthe ringers are gun shy of the banks and popup blinds so it time to get flat.

Re: Best Way To Learn How To Duck Call?
I lived in lakeland Fl for 10 years hunted many of the big lakes and hunted many of the mine pits that were reclaimed after the strip mining. As far as the ringers go...find the hydrilla and watch were they are landing had my best hunts for teal, ringers and even mottled ducks in the thickest hydrilla that is sumerged on the lakes or mine pits. Practice you ducks calls but I would not be afriad to use the teal call he males you can some time peep them in. Are you hunting the cost or in land?

Re: Best Way To Learn How To Duck Call?
Fiirst things first. Don't believe that shit about saying words into the call. It's sounds like crap. I use the SOUND Voot! Using my teeth to stop my tongue at the end. I practiced 6 hrs a night. I drove my wife crazy. But once u get it it's way. After a week of practicing u should be more than sufficient. Also another tip the "feed call" tick a tick a tick a tick a. Ducks don't do that . And the hail call you'll see on YouTube. They don't do that either.
