Is it too early to flood?
It's been dry here like everywhere else this summer, yesterday it started raining like a cow pissin' on a flat rock and some of the creeks started flowing.
Ive got about 5 acres of pin oaks and white oaks I can flood if I close the little dam I have on the creek, but I am worried if I flood too early and water stays on until Feb. it will kill some of the trees. It may be another dry year so I want to take advantage of the water while I've got it, what do you guys think?

Too early
October to mid October when your sure the trees are dormant. Too bad you didn't plant some food in there for them.

Re: Is it too early to flood?
My uncle is a forestry major from La. Tech and has been in the timber industry for 30+ years. We have had this discussion before. His experience has been if the hardwoods are in a natural bottom, then they can withstand flooding at any time throughout the year. After all, mother nature does what she wants when she wants, and the trees have been able to adapt. If they are not in a natural bottom, then it may be a little early. With this year being the start of El Nino for us, I'll bet we get more rain in Sept-Oct. for you to be able to flood.

Thanks, hopefully we can get some of that rain... I missed my chance.
I've tried planting millet in the past, but the soil is really silt/sandy and stays in the shade. It never made it to a seed head.

Re: Is it too early to flood?
It won't hold it for more than 1-2 days in any depth unless I want it too.
Now would be a good time to get the levee fixed and take advantage of this hurricane!
