Post Mid-West drought
For the fellas that live up that way, how bad is it?

I hear that farmers are cutting corn for silage and From what I understand almost all of yalls ponds and potholes have dried up and the rivers are barely running.

Does Y'all's duck season have a chance?

A small chance. It is bad though. Small ponds I'm always lookin at ducks on are gone. The marsh that I was runnin a foot a water in some places I'm now cuttin through thick mud barely able ta make it through. A lot a the corn is brown. It's not all places but a good majority. The northern half of WI has gotten good rain fall. The lakes are fine there.

I'm damn glad I got a MM this year. I wouldn't be gettin anywhere this year otherwise.

It may be beneficial though. Ain't a lot a people up here with MM's so I have more good options no one else can get to. Plus it confines the birds to less places.

The river here is running a quarter what it usually is. All the small potholes are dry. All the areas that are pumped will prob not be because of lack of money and low river levels.

KDW has closed many lakes in KS to swimming and skiing as they all have blue-green algae in them. The county we live in has had over 25 head of cattle die from drinking it. Everything West of I-135 is really dry. We have three small ponds on our property and they are all dry. The creeks around here pretty much dry up this time of year anyway. It has been a whole lot worse in Ok. We haven't had more than 20 hundredths since spring. It just rained this evening West of us and it brushed up beside us. We received a four inch-er. The drops on the sidewalk,, measured four inches apart, and that was it. We don't need mud boats up here. There's no mud!

My prayers go out to all of Ok and Tx. I know it is worse there.

It's fine here in Texas.. Lakes are back up to being level, ponds are filled back up, creeks are good.

We had a horrible drought last year tho, and I must admit it was one of the funnest and most successfull seasons I've ever had here. It was like finding a treasure chest when following creeks, and checking spots your not sure had water and finding a small pothole. We found a few spots nobody else knew about nor thought of, and found a lot of good holes that landed us a lot of great hunts thanks to a whole whole lot of scouting, mainly out of a canoe. We hunted were a mm wouldent stand a chance getting to, which in the end turned out to Beverly rewarding.

I hope it stays dry enough to keep the river in its banks this year.

They are draining one of the lakes I hunt and I have been mapping out where all the low spots that will hold water are, all the potholes and beaver dams in the woods, and stuff like that.
I enjoy hunting lakes when they are down.

Come on guys, our ducks aren't going to LA or TX! All the clubs have record crops of corn, millet, buckwheat, smart weed, you name it. The wet bottom ground that can never get planted got planted and irrigated!

Thanks to all you DU supporters for the beautiful new pumps that are going to fill our clubs and backwaters to put the ears of corn 2" above the water!!!

The only thing I'm worried about is that the fields around the hot tubs won't have enough feed to hold the ducks through the end of season. The corn looks like sheeeeet!

And don't forget about the price of beef for next year when the grain prices sky rocket. Burger is super cheap now because the big farms are butchering the old cows so they don't have to feed them through winter but that is going to end soon enough. Ethanol is no longer a cheap alternative to anything!!!! One more reason to jack fuel prices. Don't worry brothers, Obama is going to be running through the streets throwing out hundred dollar bills soon enough!!! We will all be saved.....er.....reformed??????

Drought sucks no matter where it happens.

I predict many more mallards in LA. Everything else about the same. Just my gut suspicion.

I know last yr in South Tx was freaking unreal the amount of birds we saw down there. Most I've seen in the 5 Yrs of going down there. Watch this yr we go and not see chit.

I don't think the duck hunting here could be any worse then it was last yr. Last yr was freaking unreal how slow it was. we had a couple decent hunts but no to brag about much. I just hope it gets bad dam cold!!!! Thats when it gets good here.

Plenty of water and rain up here, corn looks good, we're on our 3rd cutting of hay and the lakes and flowadges are almost full. Was a good breeding year with lots of little ones on most of the lakes.

The Wabash River is so low I heard today that there was a huge asian carp die off. Heard there are tens of thousands of them rotting on the sand bars. Going to take a look for myself this weekend. The corn here is spotty. Lots of local geese up and on the wing now. Lots of geese hitting the Ohio River. Was out monday night late setting bait lines and seen huge flocks of geese roosting on the river. We have mowed our yard one time so far this summer.

Here in the Memphis area, the water is so low we had to start spraying the catfish to keep the fleas off of them!

Actually, the Mississippi River is so low that it is delaying some cargo traffic and shut down the new riverboat cruise line that just started this year. River levels too low for either the cargo or the cruise.

I got a feeling my pond is going to turn over soon if we don't get some rain. Last batch of fish we caught out of it tasted TERRIBLE! My wife don't mess up frying bluegill and bass!

We have been getting some rain and I might get the tractor/mower out this week. Maybe. However we did have a severe hail storm here last week when it was 103 degrees. Dented my new Duramax, totaled out my Sheriffs Patrol vehicle. getting a new standing seam 24 gauge roof for my home to replace the dented all to hell standing seam roof. Other than that just waiting to come to La to gator hunt.

I live pretty close to netman.

I have just now started to mow my yard on a regular basis. All small ponds and wetlands are pretty much dry. My teal spots are rough. We will see how it turns out.

This is a complete 180º from this time last year. We had tons of water early and it lasted thru all season.

I am hoping with all the grasses seeding and such, that we do get some water and it fill in those areas!

Water level is low, and the water temps are high which means plenty of weed growth for the ducks to feed on here, but the fishing sucks. Corn is over 7ft tall, but only producing a single ear per stalk. Head 45 min to the east and corn is waist high and wilted. Being about a half mile from the Mississippi you'd think field hunting mallards would be great, but they seldom leave the water to feed in this area.

southern indiana is horrible! corn is pretty much a total loss...pushing 50 bushels per acre in the best feilds....pot holes ponds and rivers are extremely low...teal opener this weekend...once birds are found they wont have many places to go...season could be a total loss if we dont get any rainfail..

LOL, so much for low river level! The IL started going up before the rain got here. The corp is holding our water back because the Mississippi is so swolen. It is nice to see the river where it should be.
