 AR build ?
Well I now have two stripped lowers in hand. There is a company called Mag Tactical Systems that manufacturers mil spec AR parts and rifles. Mag Tac is five miles from my home. One of my co workers went there a month or two back and sparked up a conversation about them making us Sheriff Deputy's some lowers with our dept logo/badge on them. Several weeks later we now have them. They cost us 140 bucks each with logo lazered engraved on them so I bought two of them. My question for you guys in the know is......I want to build one into a 22 lr. I don't want minute of angle I want minute of squirrel. I want this AR22 to be a tack driver just like my Remington 541T. I'm looking for a one hole thirty yard squirrel slayer. Can a AR like this be built? I have looked at several forums where guys have built AR22's however none mention them being tack drivers. They mention they are nice plinkers. No can do sez I. I have the new Brownell catalog and have sized up this project. Its not a big to do however getting a very accurate 22 might be a task. I have seen a barrel system by TACCOM that appears interesting. Is this project possible? Thanks. Netman

 Re: AR build ?
And the rifling twist. You want the tightest you can get. 1 in 7 in excellent. It can go light or heavy projectiles. That way if you ever want to convert back to .223 of 5.56 you can shoot 75 gr. bullets no problem

 Re: AR build ?
Ideal twist rates for 22lr are completely different than ideal twist rates for .223/5.56.
Precision 22lr's are usually 1/16 twist, while .223/5.56 are usually 1/7-1/12. That precludes using a .223/5.56 barrel with a .22 adapter and getting any accuracy out of it.
My suggestion is a dedicated .22lr upper.
With that said, I don't have any personal experience with .22lr AR, only anschutz, kimber, CZ's and a volquartsen barreled 10/22. That tricked out 10/22 is a lot of fun to snipe squirrels with. With lapua x-act ammo, it will shoot 1/4"-3/8" 10 shot groups at 50 yards.

 Re: AR build ?
Maybe not the direction you were looking for, but I have tried several of the AR 22LR conversions over the years and have yet to find 1 that has any kind of accuracy. If you handload though, you can achieve 5.56 subsonic loads using the 50-55gr bullets that will still cycle the action of your AR15, and deliver excellent accuracy. These bullets don't expand pushed at low velocities around 1,000 fps like they do at the 3,000 fps with a "normal" load - therefore making a good round for knocking Mr. Bushy-Tail down. Yes, it cost more than a 22LR, but hey, I made the bullet, I pulled the trigger, I cleaned the critter, therefore it tastes much better The subsonic is achieved by using a shotgun based powder at a reduced load, somewhere around the 3-5gr range rather than the 25gr range of rifle powders - I prefer Blue Dot, but a lot of people use other powders, such as Clays. Although I like a "greased lightning" load that delivers a 1 moa for my serious hunting purposes - over the years I have tweaked slower moving Blue Dot loads for all my long guns to give me 1/4" grouping at 100yds. Typically, a slower moving projectile achieves a better grouping...

 Re: AR build ?
1:7 twist is not what u want in a 22! like stated above 1:16 is pretty popular for accuracy!
Problem that I have encountered with 22lr is that 22 bullets are not consistent enough to have a true one hole'r! Not really a thing of cheap 22 ammo these days!in my 22 trainer that I have, I've shot from bulk to lapua Midas+ All the match ammo (that I am aware off) is subsonic bc it is more accurate at those speeds! My gun seems to like the cci min mags which is not subsonic and the Midas+! I shoot a 5 shot group at 50 yards and it shot 3/4 Moa was perfect left/right but up and don't is what opened the group that was in the ammo there for my argument of a truly accurate 22lr! The ammo was Midas+ which is around .34 a round! Also was using a lija barrel! But it's a lot of fun shooting 22lr!

 Re: AR build ?
not sure what an true ar conversion would cost you.. but for around $500 they have true 22lr ar replicas... i have the traditional m4 look and when i put it next to my dpms about the only difference noticeable is the mag.. mine is very accurate as far as open sights are concerned.. havent put a scope on it yet but was thinking about it. the 30 rd clip is a def plus when not limited to a 10 rd mag, like looking for nutria rats!!

 Re: AR build ?
I'm a big fan of the ar, but if I were u I would build a 10/22 for ur squirrel gun, and build a blackout with one reciever, and a 308, r 5.56 with the other

 Re: AR build ?
I am not interested in the 5.56 conversion. I'm looking for a complete 22lr set up. I was asking to see if any one has built a 22 dedicated upper. I'm in no hurry so I'm plugging along looking for the most accurate set up. If anyone can provide me with the best receipe for a accurate 22 in a AR I'm ready to cook it up. Thanks
