 Layout boats
Anyone ever hunt out of layout boats? I'm pretty close to buying a UFO Erie boat. Any opinions. It's light enough to put on the front of my mud boat.

 Re: Layout boats
I had a MLB 1 man. Found myself sitting in the tender while all my buddies shot ducks. Saved a bunch of $$$ in ammo though.
Ducks can be just as shy of them as a blinded up boat.
I went all in with 6-8 dozen decoys on longlines. Lots of work to shoot a few ducks.
I kept it for a couple years and then Sold it.

 Re: Layout boats
The little otter boats like the phantom and final attack work great for puddlers in nasty stuff you can't get a layout blind in.

If you wanna have an awesome time and maybe stay in a room where children were conceived on one side and someone got stabbed over an 8-ball on the other come on down I got a can of raid.

 Re: Layout boats
I used to hunt out of a final attack in the marsh when I was younger. Hunted open flats and would throw a pile of hyacinth on the boat. Killed the chit out of em, but it was work. I'm not that mad at them anymore.

 Re: Layout boats
My situation is that I hunt a large lake with lots of divers landing in the middle and no real way to get to them. A bass boat will come by, pick them up, and they will land a few hundred yards away. There are A LOT of bass boats so it keeps the birds moving pretty good. I think a layout boat will be a pretty good way to kill divers in the afternoon. Not saying it will be a endall to hunting, just something to scratch off a few more birds in a lake that can be tricky at times to hunt.
O yea....Im still young. I dont mind putting in a little time and effort into it...Haha

 Re: Layout boats
I almost pulled the trigger on a UFO last year. Hope to revisit the purchase before fall. Around here a layout boat can be a real game changer on divers.

 Re: Layout boats
I hunted Seminole with mine. Hit and miss. Killed some nice redheads and cans with it. Other times I was staring into the blue sky.
I had the mentality that putting out 100 coot decoys and sitting in the middle of the lake would be a duck killing time. They would still mostly land with the 1000 live coots.
Don't get me wrong, it's a neat way to hunt, just don't go buy an extra freezer for the duck meat you might expect.
The guys that use them up north with success are shooting new/dumb birds. By the time they get to us, they've been shot at in 6-7 states.

 Re: Layout boats
I've got a nice Four Rivers layout I might part with. I got it three years ago with big intentions and have used it a grand total of 0 times. Figure I don't need it anymore if I'm not going to use it.

 Re: Layout boats
If you're going to hunt open water like that you still have to set up where the birds want to be. But they can be effective plus you don't have to worry about getting up at 2 in the morning to get a spot.

 Re: Layout boats
Hunted from UFOs on Chesapeake Bay with a guide for divers and really enjoyed it so I bought a Bankes one-man layout boat to use up here in Ontario. It has worked well but yes, there is some work involoved in putting out the decoy spread and you need a tender boat,. That's why it's duck huntin' and not just shootin'.

 Re: Layout boats
Check out the MOmarsh DP!! You can hunt puddlers in the marsh in the mornings, with a small longtail on the transom and then hunt divers in the afternoons by taking the motor and transom off the boat. Look them up at www.momarsh.com
