A marlin 336 is what I bought for my wife. Small enough for her, but I like shooting it also. Paid 150 for it, put a nikon 3x9x40, and a trigger kit on it. Have about 350 in it total, and it shoots like a dream. Those new leverrevolution bullets are pretty accurate and leathal.

The handi rifles are nice, but if you can get a good deal on an old lever action, they are nice guns. These are some other calibers I would look into .308, .243, 30-30, or maybe a .270.

If you're looking for an all purpose rifle, do yourself a favor and buy a .270. You can get such a wide variety of grain and load specifics in the ammo for that caliber because of how poplar that gun is.

I shoot an A-Bolt and love it.

I got a Kimber 22mag that would be just short of a .223....it can reach out and touch really far. I've killed squirrels with it at 150 yards...in the head...and rabbits a lot farther. I could put a quarter sized pattern on a 150 yard target....free hand with open sites....from a standing position with that rifle. I was fortunate to have been taught at a young age by a German Olympic gold medalist how to shoot. Just sayin' not bragging.

Rabid raccoons need not reply.

I will try to explain.I am not a rifle FE...There is not much difference in the 7mm-08 and 25-06.Both of the guns a kid could shoot and not harm them or scare them from recoil. They shoot flatter and faster then a 270.They will kill anything you want to shoot in the lower 48.I shoot a 7mm-08 and my brother shoots a 25-06.We kill hogs all the time with these rounds and most drop in there tracks. There is nothing wrong with a 270 it is good round.Put it this way...If you had a pig at 100yard running across a field. With a 270 you would need to lead the pig. With the other 2 you put cross hairs on pig and fire.

Everybody has a opinion. This is mine.

25-06 is basically a 30-06 necked down to .25 cal. this is just larger diameter than a .243 or 6 M/M which are closer to a .308 necked down to 6 M/M. This is larger than .22 cal. .25 cal is basically 1/4 inch diameter.

25-06 for reference is size of a 30-06 cartridge in length

I shoot a sig 25-06 and it's a very sweet shootin gun. I've dropped a deer at 250 yds in it's tracks. I've killed several deer with it. I put a nikon pro staff scope 3x9x40 for about $150 it's very clear, definately a good scope for the money.

Post Re: rifle opinions
they all vary. A .38 bullet actually measures .355. Some calibers were named after the inventor. .270 Winchester, .280 Remington etc. Some were named by the caliber/powder charge. .45-70, .44-40, .30-30 etc. Some like the .30-06 designate caliber/year it was adopted by the Gov. (1906)

European rounds are measured different. They are measures to the land, or bottom of rifle groove. 7.62X39 is 7.62 mm diameter x 39 mm which is the case length.

Just some useless info

I also shoot a Sauer(imported by Sig) 25-06, very acurate, and fast. I load a 115 gr. balistic tip, and shoot 300 yrds + all the time( have dropped a nice buck in his tracks at 450) Very little drop, and plenty of knock down for anything in the 48 states. But I believe it's not legal for Elk. I have it topped with a Leupold 3.5-10x50 and you can pretty much see in the dark. I have a couple of .300 win mags and they shoot really flat also, but a little overkill for deer or pigs.
Just remember, you get what U pay for, and while a $100 scope may work, there is no comparison to a good one.(Leupold,Zeiss, Swarovski)
I'm no FE by no means, just like to shoot ; just my opinion. ;)

ok ill bite on this one. Mainly, before buying a rifle you need to figure out where your going to be hunting. if your making longer shots youll need a more flat shooting rifle (ie. .270, .223. .25-06, .243) if your needing to be brush busting in the woods id go with a .30-30 or a .30-06.

i shoot a .300 Rem Ultra Mag now, but ive killed deer with my .223, .243, .270, .204, .30-30, .30-06, .280, .35 and my .300. The best all around (with cheaper bullets) would be your .270 or .30-06 though.

I ended up buying a marlin cause it has the side eject although I never put a scope on it. I like shooting it open sight. I mainly use it for my brushgun, anyways. Depending where I'm hunting I shoot that, a .243, or 30-06.

Post Re: rifle opinions
I take my rifle shooting pretty seriously and have shot all kinds of cartridges over the years. It sounds to me like you've hit the nail on the head with .270 or 30-06. I would also take a hard look at .308 because ammo is probably cheaper off the shelf and that's getting to be more of a concern. I think .280 hits the sweet spot in between all those mentioned, but I reload so finding ammo isn't a problem.

If I had your budget I'd be looking in the paper for a Remington Model 700 that already has a decent scope on it. Second choice would be a Winchester Model 70 or a Ruger. There is nothing wrong with buying a used rifle as long as it hasn't had too many rounds put through it.

I like a 30-06 myself. It also carries a wide variety of bullet choices in weight and purpose. It will hadle varmints all the way up through the big game list.

Get yourself a long action savage with the accustock and a 473 bolt face.By getting the savage you will be able to turn it into all calibers from 22-250 to 30-06 with a simple barrel change that can be done in a matter minutes at home.Shillen and Mcgowen make replacement barrels that are already chambered and finished for the savage rifles.

That remington safety and accidental discharge stuff is way old. That is the reason behind the x-mark and x-mark pro triggers. Just bought a new Remington 700 5R no problems with AD's.

Don't believe everything on tv!!! Do some research, y'all sound just like the liberals in the media!

when it comes to utility a .30 cal is the best bet. be it a 30-06 or.308. this is why: bullet choices! 55 gr. excellorater to 220 grain solids. no other cal has that range of bullets. if its going to be a utility rifle. change up on tthe bullet size and shoot it according to what you are hunting. varments=55 gr., long range light skin = 140, deer in light cover = 150-165, deer or elk in heavy cover = 180-220, even bear with the heavy bullets. hogs can be delt with with any of them if you shoot them in the head like you are soposed to.

cont. from above

this isnt a bash on anyones favorite cal. if you can shoot it well it doesnt matter what you shoot. 8 year old neice kill her first two deer with a 22 hornet yesterday. dropped one and the other rad 45 yards.

as for the 25-06, great gun but if you look it works best in certian barrels. they need a longer barrel then most. ammo can be a little hard to find.

mag. cals ie 7mm , 300 can be a little heavy to carry and they do alot of damage. a bad shot will get them down but a good shot can be a bad shot with the damage they do. if you dont hit the pocket and just the pocket its good by shoulders and maybe part of thhe back strap.

.243 great gun for deer and varments. killed lots of deer. little to light for more than a deer but good enough for hogs, as long as the shot is clear. anything and i meen anything between you and the deer and the chance of deflection is good.

.270 awesone deer cal just doesnt have the bullet choices as a 30-06 and could be a little light for elk.

.280 good median between 270 and 30-06 but when was the last time you saw ammo at walmart for one. same with 260, 257, 7-08 (grreat cal also) and dont even try to find weathherby at walmart.

as for the little guys 222, 223, 22-250, 204 etc they have there place and will kill any deer but there just too small to be utility cals.
