There are a total only 17 days of gun days for Indian Bayou WMA. I was shocked to learn this when I recently researched after not having hunted deer there since my days with Pelba Hunting Club and that the average kill per attempt is an abysmal 1/45. I just don't think the Corp of Engineers really wants us to hunt deer anymore. they've spread the deer season among gun, muzzle, and archery forcing diehard deer hunters to spend exorbitantly to outfit themselves and crushing opportunities for the average Joe to hunt. I don't like this at all. |

Just spoke to Indian Bayou WMA corp representative regarding the very limited firearm deer season there. I was told that the reason its so restricted now is because the deer population has plummeted and the hunter success has dipped so low that they had to begin the process of rehabilitating the population. Sherbourne, on the other hand, just across the Atchafalaya River saw such a drastic dip in hunters last year that they opted to increase the number of gun days there to account for this. Overall, deer hunting has decreased dramatically, he said, and the reduced number of licenses is evidence of this. This is not a good sign for the future of deer hunting on public lands in the future. |
