The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
After watching many videos, reading literature on the subject, and my own observations, I am absolutely convinced now that agricultural manipulation of crops North of Louisiana for commercial and private duck hunting has detrimentally impacted our duck hunting, and perhaps forever. It is an absolute abomination that one gets to hunt in flooded corn fields where the ears of corn float just at water level, and pretend to harvest that as though in normal agricultural practice. If I were a duck I'd never make it to Louisiana either. And, those that do make it here are drawn to the rice fields, crawfish ponds, where the same manipulation occurs, all for profit and personal motive. etc. Natural feeding areas and roosts are a thing of the past. If Louisiana doesn't step up the heat politically on this my son may never see another Mallard in the Atchafalya basin again. Just sayin.....

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
Easy solution, move to another state! There is too much money in waterfowling now to change things. Let the limit drop back to 3 birds with a 30 day season and see how fast things change.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
Here's my solution to the whole situation. My two Columbia University Engineering daughters have been working on a system to detect when every duck hunter shoots his weapon and whether a duck has been downed. Here's how it will work. Upon your application for a hunting license you must have already purchased your shells. On each box there will be an identifying code number matched to chips inserted into each shell by the manufacturer. Current gps satellites pick up the signal anytime a cartridge is discharged. Data is accumulated to calculate location, trajectory, impact, and so forth so as to be able to determine if a duck is struck or not. If struck, a count is maintained and once you reach that number your remaining shells receive a signal which will disable them. You think that's far fetched? I thought, when I had a discussion with one of the original investors of gps satellite technology years ago about joining in, that it was a crazy idea, too.
With this system we will all know by whom and where ducks are being killed, it will keep everyone honest, and management of the duck migrations will be facilitated as we will know just where the birds are being murdered. If we find from this data that short stopping through agricultural manipulation is having the drastic effect we think it is, we will then have enough to curtail the activity. Other modifications would be implemented, as needed, as well. There are a few more details to work out, like transferability of shells, privacy issues, and 2nd amendment nuances, but my contacts high up are all over this.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
Its not just private land. In the last decade the Missouri Department of Conservation has really stepped up their game. I have noticed a decrease in birds making it to AR. I can't imagine it gets any better further south. But on a side note, this year there is no water in Arkansas to even pump fields or timber so we have no place to hold birds right now. They got to go somewhere.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
Dguidry, That is the most left wing, Big Brother, Government type Bullsh!t i have ever heard out of a duck hunter. Even someone who even owns a gun. I would stop duck hunting the day that happens. Not only is that the dumbest solution i have ever heard pertaining to duck limits but it even blows my mind hearing it coming from someone on this forum. Please do yourself a favor and stop bitching about duck population and do everyone else a favor by looking down the barrel of your GPS shell loaded gun and pull the trigger. Go join Ducks Unlimited and give all your money to them or Delta waterfowl. Or better yet, go buy your own land and plant and help with the diminishing waterfowl habitat.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
Sorry to bust your bubble, but the NRA will never allow that to happen, nor would any politician supporting that theory ever be elected ever again. Maybe we should have them microchip our guns, too, so they can deactivate them before they come to take them away.
That's got to be the dumbest idea I've ever heard of. Ever.[/quote] There is already tracing material in your shells to determine where and when you bought it.

And what if I need to protect my home, family, etc., and all I have are deactivated shells because I shot a limit of ducks that day?

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
Let me type slowly so you all can understand me....the 3 bird/30 day season was not only for La back in the day,it was a restrictive season so states picked their packages and we picked that. It was tight all over the country. Some of you are too young to remember this as well as lead shot.
Also DG that is forking stupid chit. What do you do in areas that do not allow lead and are steel only. You make a hunt kill ducks what about killing some geese or jumping pheasant, rabbits or whatever else I have a god given right to kill. Do me a favor and walk in front of a bus please.
If you aint killin ducks you are not trying hard enough, deal with it.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
You guys complaining about not having ducks in LA should hunt here in South Florida so you can appreciate what you have a little more. Last year it was so bad here that I only got my limit twice and I still went as much as I could even though I was lucky to come back with 3 or more ducks.
From what I hear LA is duck heaven and you're lucky to live there.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
and as for this supposed they can track you down by you bullets crap. I'll explain:
Explosives can be identified by trace elements that are put into the compounds by the manufacturer. The trace elements identify the manufacturer and the date code (when it was made), thats all. If the ATF wants to find out who detonated an explosive they will be able to contact the manufacturer and the manufacturer will provide the ATF with a list of who purchased that date code. Then the ATF will have to start detecting to find out who actually used it.
It a slightly similar process for bullets.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
I shoot alot of mallards every year in Alabama. Wonder if the fly ways are changing? But no really, we've killed 72 ducks and 3 geese in the past 3 outtings(between 12 hunters, had 8 in one blind one day) and ain't killed a single mallard which is very unusual. It's been a mix of gads and shovelers (which we never shoot shovelers and gadwall are sort of rare for my area) with a few teal, ringneck, ruddy duck (first one I've shot), scaup, mergs (oops), and woodies. Haven't shot but 2 mallards and those were the first 2 day split. All in Alabama... Who knows... DG-You're a phuckin rah-tard.

Re: The State of Duck Hunting in Louisisana
Same ole stuff different post. I promise that if I were in MO and had property, I'de be leaveing off my corn field so that it would flood. I'de do whatever it takes to keep them birds up there so i could continue shootin.. NOW would any of you not do the same because those coonies need to shoot ducks too? don't think so. Like " I'm gonna cut my season short and let them migrate because it's the right thing to do lolololololololololololololololol... Let's get a count of those that would just let um migrate if you had the opportunity to keep them around and continue hunting.
