 spoonies anyone
well this morning we hunted a new spot in a pit blind in a crawfish pond on the back side of shurburne. I must say that I have never seen so many spoonies in my life. We started off early with 3 green wings 2 drakes 1 hen, then a woodduck drake thought it would turn out a great day of a mixed bag. Needless to say as the morning drew longer we soon realized thats about all there was around us say a few merganser, two mallards, and one group of grays, everything alse spoonbills. so we talked about it and said its getting late lets mow down some spoonies so likewise we did ended up with 3 teal, 1 woodie, and 12 spoonies. Fun hunt and wish I had him in my hands to show you but we had a group of 3 specks flying somewhat low over the blind so we said what the hell we all put 3 1/2'' in and let em fly and what do you know the lead bird cuts a flip and glides out about 100yrds from the blind uncle gets out to run after him but the bird had a 100 yrd advantage and got on the other side of the leavee for us to never find him. First time to ever shoot a goose and just my luck we loose himduck.zip

 Re: spoonies anyone
Were covered up with spoonbills in E.Tx also. I've killed a few but I've been letting most pass. I havent eaten one yet but I've heard that they're not that good.

 Re: spoonies anyone
Were you in the Krotz Springs area or the Hurtle/Courville fields next to the Sherburne North Farm (refuge off the east levee)?

 Re: spoonies anyone
yes I believe so the the refuge was in the middle of the ponds not sure what they call it but went threw marinquin and then rode the leavee but i know the tree line was shurbourn to our west and the reserve to our north dont think it was considered krotz springs it was right out of liviona to the left of 190

 Re: spoonies anyone
If the reserve was to your north, then you were in Hurtle's fields. I used to hunt those fields in college and now just occasionally deer hunt in the woods that make up the southern treeline. Our camp used to be right inside the levee on that southern edge. Could walk out the front porch and see those ponds. That is until we bulldozed it a few years ago.
Did you see any big flocks of geese in the dry fields?

We've been slaying the spoonies like crazy too. Spoonies and grays are covering us up!
