I am building a blind in the woods, its gunna be 12x5 and about 4' off the ground. How can I drive the posts in the mud? There is a thin layer of grass and roots but after that, I could shove a pipe as far down as I wanted. I had thought about bringing a pump and washing a hole out for the posts but the water is so shallow and grassy I could never keep it running. We had some shitty 4x4's for our posts and when we tried to drive them with a sledge they just busted. Just wondering how some of yall do it... |

We did that, we just need a way to keep them from sinking further down all the time. Thinking about digging holes and sticking a peice of 6" PVC with a cap on the bottom in it then putting the post and sac-crete in there. How far down would yall drive them? 4'? |

Best way to keep them from going further is make a pad around the poll after it's drove to make a bigger surface area |

We thought about that too, like take a 2x4 and nail it to all the posts on that side right above the mud? I guess my question is, what is the easiest way to get them in the ground and not split the board hitting it (thought about a steel cap made with a plate and square tubing to slide over it) |

Its just small buckbrush in the hole, if you got out to the trees on the bank you would be 40 yards from the hole. |

Pour a footer on the bottom. Dig a hole, drive the support into the ground, and pour some ready mix concrete to secure it. Should distribute the weight and hold it there.... |

A lot of guys i know put the post in a 5 gal bucket then fill the bucket with sac crete and just set it on the bottom. |

When we put up carports, I use a 5" square tubing rammer we call a "mother in law" Mofo will whoop you but I reccomend doing like willet said.. Pund them in the ground 2'+ and your good or till you can't pound them any further. Then do like Poker1 said about theboard on the mudline to help stop it from sinking. |

acuually in the marshy areas like that all you need is a good 1/2 drill cordless with a plant bit like they use to put ferns and shit in at lowes to break the surface then tie the post together at the surface after with 2x4's. |

We call it a widow maker at work. but a pile driver made of 6" pipe that's 24" long with handles will keep you in shape. Cap one end so that it rest on the post. The other contraption is what we call teeth. Basicly a clamp that bolts to the post so that you can shimmy up the post to get the pile driver on top. takes two people to do this one to hold the post while the skinny one in the group climbs up and jumps on the clamps till the widow maker is needed. Then the fun begins. Enjoy. |

Don't know how soft your mud is but down in the marsh we jet our pilings in. Basically a water pump attached to a long metal pipe that shoots water out of it like a jet. But you're gonna go a lot deeper than 4 feet. |

Bring a drill and a good sized auger bit, break through the roots and the post will go right in. Once you get the posts the depth you want them. nail a board across all of them at ground level. This will tie them all together for strength, plus keep the individual posts from sinking any further. |

leave the post flat cut on the end, if you have water there where you are trying to set the post, figure out where you want it. set the post up and just work the post vertically up and down and it should go down as far as you want, when you pull the post up a little it sucks water to the bottom then when you push the post down it hydraulics and washes out the mud underneath, i have built 10 blinds in all different bottom types using this method. about three foot deep is all you need for a sturdy base. I set 6 post for a 4x8 blind and never had a post go soft or sink once you get them braced in by building the blind on top. |

We've built many platforms in the swamp. We cut a point on the 4 x 4 and use a 48" pipe wrench. Open the jaws so that it will fit around around the side 4 x 4 fairly snug and stand on the handle n slightly bounce on it till you get the desired depth. Make sure you put a short 2 x across the bottom to prevent it from sinking deeper. |
