Just curious of opinions on this. Wondering if a 22 LR can put hogs down at relatively close range, within 75 Yards. I know that the 22 mag would be the better choice. But its not an option right now.
And what round is the best for this application.
Or other legal ways to kill hogs on management areas during all seasons. And mostly in the ADWMA.

Thanks for the info. I figure that I can put one behind their ear for them and do a little brain surgery.

down here we are not aloud to use rifles such as 22's its against the law, we can only use shotguns with slugs and buckshot and bows on the WMA's or dogs

Its says in the rule book that you can take hogs with rimfire rifles. Or shotguns loaded with nothing bigger than BB lead or F shot steel. Or with whatever season is open.
Basically what you can shoot rabbits with. It is bow only in the atchafalaya delta, but you can also rabbit hunt too. So the need to know question is, can you or can't you hunt with a 22 LR on that management area. They are also going to have an extended hog season that will allow the use of buckshot and slugs. Any clarification on these issues will be a good help

you may want to call the LDWF. i know if you even get caught with any gun on ACC WMA they will ticket you.

if you end up using a .22LR round get the CCI stingers. there the baddest .22LR bullet out I think. They shoot a 32grain hollow point at 1640 fps and are pretty devastating for a 22. they come in a 50 pack i think.

Use of a longbow (including
compound bow and crossbow) and
arrow or a shotgun not larger than a
10 gauge fired from the shoulder
without a rest shall be legal for taking
all resident game birds and quadrupeds.
Also, the use of a handgun, rifle
and falconry (special permit required)
shall be legal for taking all game species
exCePT turkey. It shall be illegal
to hunt or take squirrel or rabbits
at any time with a breech-loaded rifle
or handgun larger than a .22 caliber
rimfire or a primitive firearm larger
than a .36 caliber.

This is what the rule book says, and I am looking for the spot that says something about the 17 calibers. But I am sure they are illegal on WMA's. But that would be the ticket. LOL

Small Game: Same as outside EXCEPT Rabbit:
Wax Lake Delta: Oct. 1-31 and Feb. 1-29, with or without
beagles. Nov. 1 - Jan. 31 without beagles only.
Main Delta: Feb. 1-29, with or without beagles. CLOSED
October through January.

Rabbit season is closed so, thats how you would get a ticket.

I shot my first hog ( a sal ) with a .357 behind the ear at 25 yards and the thing "apparently" dropped dead. My buddy and I even took pictures with it and the guys at the outfitter we were using, picked it up and put in in the swamp buggy to take us back to camp. I kid you not, about 15 minutes into our trip, that damn hog woke up, jumped off the buggy, and started hauling ass with a 3" hole on the other side of her head.

Luckily the hog fell over after running about 40 yards and one of the outfitters that was sitting next to the hog managed to catch up with her and dispatch it. So after watching this, I would not shoot a hog with a .22LR even though I'm sure it's illegal.

As many others have said shoot them in the soft spot behind the ear and it will take them down every time. It doesn't hurt to have a semi auto(10/22 ruger works well) with a couple of banana clips so you can get more than one hog at a time. I 2nd what spiky208 said about the CCI stingers its the only way to go. The stingers are much faster than a normal .22(I think 1700 fps vs. 1200 fps) which allows you to shoot 75 yards with out much drop. Other options include F steel shot or ringing a shell. I have killed 50 lbers at about 30 yards with F steel shot and bigger hogs at about 50 yards with a rung shell. Rung shell - take a pocket knife and cut around the shell just above the brass until its just barely hanging together. When you shoot it the entire shell minus the brass will leave the barrel like a big slug. The entrance wound will be huge and sometimes you will have an exit wound and sometimes not.

Be very careful ringing a shell if you have choke tubes.
