I don't shoot sht I ain't gonna eat, and I don't want a limit of spoonies or mergansers if some gadwall come by. But I'll take me a limit of hens. |

Depends on the day. If the mallards are flying good, I try to have a gentlemen shoot. On a tuff day, anything that comes in! |

I just make it rain . If it is cupped up and landing gear down then it is getting sprayed in the face. Unless I have my limit of that bird. |

I try to let them put their feet down and pick the drakes that are the prettiest... But if they come rippin thru I cut the ones I can draw a bead on.... Also learning to ID birds at distance helps to pick the call and make those kind of decisions ahead of time - so the rookies can shoot the "happy mallards" and bluebills - LOL |

It would have to be a shit ton of ducks with the perfect set-up for me to go drakes only. |

Post subject: | Re: Shooting Hens |
Hens taste the same as drakes. I won't shoot trash ducks, because I'd rather not clean and eat the stinkin things. I have made a few hunts where I shot JUST drakes, only because I had a bet with a buddy. Most peoples reasoning in shooting just drakes is it makes for a better picture, that's pretty much the only reason I can even see behind it. |

Well you see there is a higher drake to hen ratio, hence the drakes only thing. It's like the duck that laid the golden egg thing. They don't fuck themselves but there are more drakes to hens every year. Next question |

I just pick out and shoot only da banded birds. Drake or hen if it has got a band it's goin down. I let all da other ducks keep flyin. |

Someone has to keep the spoony population down. As for the hen thing 2 hours after shooting time anything goes |

If there are plenty of ducks I do try to shoot drakes. I don't sweat it if there happens to be some collateral damage in the process. If a lone mallard hen is working the dekes or just falls into the spread I let her be. Just a personal choice on my part. |

we try to shoot only drakes if possible but sometimes it just dont happen that way...like this morning only groups of mallards we could get to work were all hens and 1 drake every time. well we limited on hens for the first time. ive only been on 2 hunts that i could pick drakes only rest of the time your scrambling to get your limit. i can say that everytime i raise my gun to shoot im looking for drakes before i pull the trigger |
