Post question for goose hunters
Going on my first real goose hunt this weekend. Will be with a guide in layout blinds. So geese should be in pretty close, we hope lol.

My questions is what brand , shot size, and length would you recommend?

Gun is a sbe2, with a kick's full. so i can shoot 3 1'2"

IF the birds are finishing close 3-1/2" is overkill (though it can be a lot of fun to wax em with)

Get the cheapest 3" BB you can.

We do more goose hunting here than duck hunting so..

I love hunting from a layout blind.

1) practice sitting up quickly while shouldering gun.

2) practice using your elbows to pop the doors open, just before sitting up. A friend of mine used to just sit up which did pop the doors open until the bolt handle of his shotgun got caught on the inside handle on blind door. It popped the shell out of the chamber so I shot the banded goose to finish my limit.

3) if everything goes right any cheap 3" BB's will work. I usually have BB's and BBB's with me. For brand, whatever you like or whatever patterns well.

4) enjoy yourself!

I'll just shoot a heavy load of #2s if geese are decoying. If they are in the wheelhouse that load will break wings easy and fills in your pattern nice. That way you can shoot for the face area.

Heck. We use modified or at the very most improved modified. BB's pattern well and if birds are not getting closer then 40 yards use BBB's. They are a lot tougher (if doing body shots) than teal, but a hell of a lot bigger and slower. If you wait til they are only about 6ft - 10ft off the ground, they can't recover fast enough to get away. And when they turn sideways, put the bead on the white chin strap and they'll drop every time.

We shoot a lot of geese and sandhill crane up here. If the geese are decoying close, I shoot 2's at em. It they are passing us, we will use the BB's.

As others have said:

1. Have a designated shot caller, and watch out for other people and the dog! Shooting laying on the deck is different than shooting ducks out of a boat or blind. It can get insane if the geese are decoying good.

2. Practice shooting sitting on your a$$.

3. Don't start shooting until you are sitting up and have gun fully shouldered.

2s are great to, depending on the shell, i like the hevi metal 2s thats what i use when its duck and goose season, have a better range for the ducks and wont blast them to pieces but will drop geese just as good if they are decoying, hell if they are decoying and ur in a layout they can get right on u and in that case u could use anything, maybe even the but of ur gun hahaha
