Mainstream calls I really like hobos. I have an icu2 and a prime meat that I like. My buddy Clent Hughes owns Fowlfield calls. He makes a lot of great single reeds and goose calls, but his cutdowns are the shizzle. He turns some from wood and acrylic and has a mold like the old D2's from Olt. Here's my favorite. Check out www.fowlfieldcalls.com to look at some of his work.

I have always wanted a cutdown..never blown one before though. I just got a jj lares timber. Some reason its extremely raspy..almost to raspy. jj lares t1 , echo open water, and rnt macrohen cocobol is what ill hunt with this year. I like the lares becuase it wont stick but I just need to figure that thing out.

The cut downs work really good in timber but I find they are too loud for marsh

I have a $15 echo trash talker I tuned myself. I have several higher end calls but I always reach for that one, it had just enough rasp to it.

I like my RNT short barrel and RNT original. My RNT DC Diablo is a lil raspy for me but I'm getting us to it.

Mayberry makes a good one, & I also make one. Hard to say which is better of the 2, but both are better than any others I've heard.

Timber rattler, a Frankenstein old southern game calls coco and acrylic, been filed on and custom cut reeds....very whiney or nasal.....old faulks made into a gadwall call and a wingstinger made into a teal call..... I also like my 2 old rnt's ..... one original with old phone number and the other is the rnt world champion.

sent by carrier pigeon...don't shoot it!!!!

RNT Short Barrel Butch turned and tuned just for me is my go to call. If I'm hunting timber in Arkansas or one of our rice fields, I actually blow a Big Lake D2T2. Badass call. It's a double reed call. The top reed is a T3 dimpled metal reed. It's bore is the same as their competition calls so it'll scream when you need it but is still super ducky to finish them.

Got damn! 80$ for a gadwall call????!!!??? I worked enough of them bastards with a mallard call or a whistle to never spend 80 bucks on a gad call. That's bananas.

There's a difference in a mass produced plastic call & hand crafted, hand tuned custom call tho. Kevin makes his from different types of specialty woods, & turns them by hand on a lathe in his backyard shop. I take our Killer Kallz G2-L (which is a $95 all acrylic call) & I make a few changes to one of our specialty tone boards & hand tune it with a different reed to make mine. Not everyone will spend $17k on a duck boat either, just sayin...

Post subject:  Re: your favorite duck call

I've got 5 130$+ hand built calls, and I don't mind paying for quality stuff, I just can't see spending big money on a call to go "bamp. bamp bamp. bamp. bamp" on when a mallard call works fine. I've never seen a gray call that's loud enough anyway. If it makes you feel better using a gray call to work grays, and it works for you, then that's great. At the end of the day, if you ain't where they wanna be, you could sound like the Carrie Underwood of hen ducks and they gonna keep on flying by;)

I have a couple acrylics that I really like. RNT DC, KillerKallz S Wind and 2 Gaston Customs. If they don't come to a mallard call or my set then they get to live to fly another day.

Some areas and species of birds react well to calling and a good call & driver make a lot of difference. Others are largely controlled by the set-up and very minimal calling if any at all.
If you are going to call, get one and learn how to blow it SO IT SOUNDS LIKE A DUCK! not the stage of a calling contest.

The best duck call made is the one "YOU" can blow...& make sound like a real duck! I stole the 1st half of that from an old man that gave that advice years ago. ;)

These died in the Army timber to the tunes of RNT and Big Lake Calls

These died to the same tunes. Why waste money on a grey call?

Post subject:  Re: your favorite duck call

Mayberry is on here under DuckPro1. I did tune the call under Kevin's supervision because he was teaching me how. So basically he tuned it. Last I heard the $80 calls were specialty wood. The standard cocobolo was $30. That included tax. Unless something has changed those should still be the right prices. They are great calls and several members have them. I used one all season and it was deadly.
