Help with specklebelly setup - mid split update, terrible
I just picked up a rice field lease south of Jennings. On side of the leeve is flooded rice, the other is chopped bean field. Or blind is in the middle. From what I understand geese tend to be plentiful in this area. How do you typically setup a deek spread for specks? How many what type etc?

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
I only put out a dozen full bodys with good results. Seperate them into groups of 2s, 3s, and a group of 5 groups being 5 to 8 yards apart

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
Also youll want the decoys directly up wind of the blind at least 20-30 yds. That way when the birds commit and make their final pass into the wind they will have to pass over the blind. Another tip is make sure the blind is well grassed, working geese is nothing like ducks, it may take them several minutes or more to work and they are much more skittish than ducks so be still.

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
Mann.. Get out of that ASAP. He has awful hunting on his fields!!! I know because I've hunted in 3 different locations that he has and it's all a big bust!!! My buddy leased from him last year and said it was the worst hunting he's had in his life and that was a mike North of Jennings.. I've also hunted the same blind y'all most likely got in lake Arthur and it was a 0-1 duck a day after the first two weekends. Had alot of geese but the birds didn't want the fields at all!! It was all passing shots. I've also hunted fields he has in Crowley and same thing it's a big wast of time and money!! Just trying to let you get a heads up man good luck..

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
I guided for Kevin Babineaux for a while last year and that's his main farmer he leases from.(Crowley, lake Arthur blinds) and I ended up quitting because it was embarrassing to bring customers everyday and scratch didn't even have a chance to work birds most of the days unless it was spooneys or blackjacks passing by. Good luck man but I'd try n get your money back before the season. Or imma be saying I told you so at the end of next season.. Trying to help a brother out

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
And if you need other proof just go to Louisiana sportsman forums and search his name. Have about 12 different people in the past who said the same thing and bad mouth his fields and says he's just a big ripoff. In the lake Arthur blind the total bird count for Kevin last year out of that blind was 28 birds!!! N that's all season hunting during the week to charging customers to go kill 0 birds!

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
I read the stuff on sportsman. A guy I work with was the one with the bird cannon next door. Basically we are looking at this as a way in down there. Get a chance to talk to some people and get better leads. We had trouble finding a lease last year in that area. I appreciate the warning but I think we are gonna roll the dice. If it blows then we will move on down the road.

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
Gotcha.goodluck man. N go n follow speckle belly hunting club in Facebook. They had a couple real good blinds come up for lease this year that took about 150 specks and couple hundred snows and blues this past year. Good looking property with birds but the blinds are expensive as shit!!

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
I've heard of Reggie before and heard a few bad things about him but that doesn't mean a thing. What I've learned from some of the clowns that I've seen lease good goose killing blinds in the past and turn it into a pile of crap is that a lot of people are idiots. They lease great goose killing blinds, dont grass it worth a damn, then try to turn it into a magical blind that kills limits of ducks and geese which really screws the whole thing up. When they don't kill anything out of it because they really don't know how to hunt geese, they blame the person who they leased it from instead of saying, "damn I'm a dumbass who don't have the first clue how to hunt". From what I understand, that Reggie dude leases A LOT of property out so he probably leases to a few of these clowns who then try to run him down when they can't post pics of their kill on their favorite website. As far as how to set up for geese, first thing is concealment. You should be able to step back from the levee and say now where the fuck is my blind. Once you do that, get a call that you can make some decent sounding clucks on. Once you do that your good, decoys are just icing on the cake

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
I didn't read all the other post but specs are dumb you can just throw out a couple hundred snow rags and shoot specs, snows, and canadians from that. Specs can spot the white easier so you get alot more attention.

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
Yeah, I got a little off topic there. Sorry to ninja up your thread smboudreaux. I'll try to contribute something helpful. Like everybody said, CONCEALMENT is key, they are very wary birds. Whoevers calling's face has to be hid good and everybody else's head needs to be down until the caller calls the shot. Like they said get a good quality call and practice a lot...and don't do too much, just tell what they wanna hear. Its easy to blow them out. Specks don't usually fly in massive groups like snows so like everybody else I hunt over 18-24 dekes. And it's a beautiful thing when them suckers are back peddling in your face at 15 yards going BLEH BLEAH! ain't much else like it

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
I appreciate the feed back on Reggie. If the field is lame or if we setup the blind wrong, I can handle that. Im new to the goose game so I'm sure we will make rookie mistakes. 6k or free its still hunting. Ill spend my share of the 6k with a smile just to not deal with the knuckle heads on public land. I've hunted public waters for over a decade and the past couple years have gotten just plain ridiculous. If he double books for teal season we will have issues. We knew his Rep going in.
Setting up for ducks isn't an issue. No stranger to that game. Ducks are my primary target. The geese are just a bonus. And from from I'm gathering from this post is concealment is critical. A dozen full body decoys will work and basic calling should do the job.
As far as decoy placement, we have rice on the north and beans to the south. I understand we will put the goose decoys in the beans. Should we put a couple pairs or groups in the rice if the water is shallow enough?

 Re: Help with specklebelly setup
I appreciate the insight. I wont pretend to know much about killing geese. Hell that's why I started this thread. I'm keeping the lease. Trail by fire. We'll piece it together.

Re: Help with specklebelly setup - mid split update, terrib
Man all you cats who warned me can say I told you so. To date we have about 30 birds down including teal season. This will be our last season with ole reggie. Ducks where our first target but if we want to salvage anything from this season we will have to change gears and target geese. Tons of geese in the area.
