Post Foreign Iron
Last day of the season I got this banded Sprig. Band looked funny and had no info on how to report it. Just had the band numbers and Tokyo, Japan and "Inform" spelled in English. Did some digging and got in touch with the person in Japan who coordinates bird banding over there.

Turns out the bird was banded by Japanese authorities on December 6, 2002 and somehow got mixed up in the breeding grounds and went down the wrong flyway. I asked them how many recoveries they have had in North America and they said that since 1961 just 38 Japanese bands have been recovered in North America with 18 recovered here in CA and the rest in WA, OR, UT, and one in MS last season.

I got a banded greenhead not 50 feet from this the exact same time just one week prior. Not bad for my last bird of the year.

I haven't been able to get a good close up pick of the writing on it as I can't figure out how my camera can zoom in without making everything blurry. But here is a pick of it next to a mallard band - hopefully this works.
