Post Cast net thoughts
For years I have been using a six foot cast net to catch shad and skipjacks to bait my jumper lines aka trot lines. Well recently I bought a ten footer from Memphis Net and Twine. I got on youtube and found a technique to throw it. Went out today and found some shad flicking the surface and caught several with the small net. Got the bigun out and made one perfect throw and caught enough shad to fill a cooler half full. The second toss was perfect but I caught a rattle trap that was snagged on something and I tore a four foot hole in my new cast net. I did get the rusted hook rattle trap
Has anyone repaired a tear in a mono cast net and fixed the hole? I paid a good chunk for the cast net and really don't want to trash it with only two throws on it.
Any thoughts or suggestions on repairing this net would be appreciated. Where I throw my cast nets is kinda snaggy and damage is to be expected but I doubt I will ever catch another rattle trap again. Thanks in advance.
Randy

Looks like Memphis Net & Twine sells a book on making and repairing cast nets, might be $7 well invested -- http://www.memphisnet.net/product/1976/videos

When I bought the net I got the book too. Looks like I'm gonna be doing some sewing tomorrow.

I repair mine all the time with light mono. I switched to a ten footer also and catch a lot more now than I ever did with a six footer. I usually get out the six footer in snaggy areas though.

When I got off the river today I got the net repair book the Capt and I were discussing up top. It was not much help however it did mention sewing up holes by lacing mono through the holes. I have to trim the mono stubbs off so the net will throw without being snaggy after the sewing job. One thing the manual mentioned was that the fish don't care if the repair is crappy or not just as long as the repair does not impair the net opening.
On a good note I caught a couple hundred pounds of blue cat today. It was a long process of checking my jumper lines with two barges nosed into the bank over my lines. After waiting for a hour or so for them to move I boarded a barge and climbed up to the wheel house and spoke to the capt. He was kinda shocked to see someone not on his crew but told me that there was a barge in the lock and three more coming down river after the one in the lock. So I went and got a cold beverage and waited another hour and then they moved up so I could run my lines.
Thanks for your replys.
Randy

Randy we sow our cast nets with mono all da time.... pretty much lace it back together with a bunch of continuous overhands and just make sure it ain't bunched up nowhere.

P.S.... might wanna check ur state regs. Here in La. we have an 8.5' size limit on cast nets.

How well I know the feeling, same thing stump said, mine's been patched probaby a dozen times from carp/catfish/misc crap in da water. I use a 5' net cause it's pretty tight where I gotta cast sometimes. 10' net? Holy crap, ya'll must be casting in the middle of the Gulf, i'd have that thing hooked on every tree on the Island.

My big cast net has extra heavy weights. When I made the perfect cast I caught shad of all sizes and a very large amount. I'm going out to the barn here in a minute and patch that sucker up and go get some bait. Thanks for the tips.
DA good job on those teal. We have a spot where 59 canada geese have been flying into everyday at about 0930. We are going after them tues or weds. Oh I forgot to say they are all BANDED. Asked the lake owner and he said we had to hunt them during the week but get'm all if we can.
