 Food plots
I'm new to planting food plots. Anyone got some cheap ideas for tilling and planting the seeds?

 Re: Food plots
How big of food plots? Do you have a tractor?
If you have a tractor with no disc you can take a box blade and drop the teeth and turn it like that. We always used a seed thrower that hangs on your neck and turn the handle!

 Re: Food plots
You really need to break the ground up, try to kill the competition too. I plant Coker feed oats and winter wheat. Triple 13 fertilizer. I plant 30-50# of seed per acre and 100-150# of fert/acre Not really anything cheap about plots, but if ur going to go thru the motions make the best of it.
You gonna have the place for a while?

 Re: Food plots
Good suggestions so far. Another thing to think about, if you have lots of pine trees around you are gonna need to lime the plot!

 Re: Food plots
I don't have much to plant and I don't have a tractor but I do have a fourwheeler. I'm just looking for a way to break the ground up and to put the seeds in the dirt. I plan on adding fertilizer and lime just don't want to have to spend big bucks on equipment.

 Re: Food plots
I've used my ranger with a small disc that we built, that has like 4 disc . you have to Jack up the 4wheeler and put it in receiver hitch. works pretty good on sprayed field or soft soil

 Re: Food plots
X2 soil test. I'm guessing you could rent a 4 wheeler disc. Make your own drag out of chain link fence. We used buck busters seed mix and were happy with it. Biologic was good when we played around with a few plots. Check the bags and make sure the seed ratio is not loaded with mainly rye grass.

 Re: Food plots
I think all the biologic etc are a waste of money. I prefer not to mix seed and to patches of each anyways. The only thing I will mix is clover. I plant durana clover. Chicory is real good and I like rape as well. Wheat is my filler and I buy it by the ton. It will grow straight on a dirt road and about every where else you throw it out. It will grow in a truck bed if the seed is left in it. And deer eat the shit out of it
