Who here has much experience with them? I'm looking at buying one and was wondering what kind of features and or brands to look for or avoid. Would be used to put in food plots in medium to soft soil. |

I used to design and build discs for a living if nobody has any better suggestions I'll do a bit of reaseach. |

IMHO, a lot of it depends on the old saying, "you get what you pay for"... for an effective "cut" you need weight, the more lbs/sq inch of pressure to to the blade tips, the better the cutting ability. Unless you have bare dirt, those lightweight $300 cheapo's aren't going to do you much good, pretty much because there is no weight to them to get them to "cut" through the existing "grasses" - not to mention the product quality is not there... I had one of the Tarter's for a while, then I got to thinking why? I have 5 various sized tractors anywhere from the 16 hp Satoh Beaver to 70 hp Case and a couple of disc harrows that fit some of them, why do I need 1 for the 4 wheeler too??? The Tarter worked great, just not as good (or fast) as me running a brush cutter with a tractor, then a 2 bottom turning plow, following up with a disc harrow, then spreading my seed and running a roller over it... A disc harrow is not going to do much without at least cutting the "grass" down to a manageable level... Back to your question... The Tarter I had has some weight to it - I think somewhere around 400+ lbs - but it takes a "decent" sized ATV to run it... I pulled mine with a Polaris Sportsman 500 (my Honda Fourtrax 300 4X4 wouldn't pull it digging). I paid $600 for the Tarter 2nd hand, and sold it for $650, so I actually made a little on it - I think retail today is something over $1K and there are other brands out that are probably better for over $2K, but they incorporate plows with them... Make sure you have enough ATv and invest in a good sprayer as well |
