My brother was diagnosed with MS not long ago so he really can't do much on his own. Took him hunting in PAC WMA opening weekend and it was a bust. I asked if he was up to going the Day after T-Giving. It was a cold morning and we were trying a new spot that I've never been to. We went to the Isle d'Jean Charles launch and went off to find a spot. Got turned around and had the boat facing the wrong way. We setup our spread and waited for LST. Had a few teal and some grey's land in the spread. Because it was before LST we just sat and watched them, although everyone else was shooting. My luck is I'll get busted for shooting 1 min before LST. Seen the funniest thing when a teal almost landed on my Lucky teal. I think it actually hit the spinners. Right at sunrise my brother took this picture. We did move after picking up birds and the setup was better without the sun glare. We had a good morning compared to opening weekend. He saw many birds cupped and just about landing in the decoys. Had a few groups of greys and teal come in that we didn't even shoot at because they seemed just out of our comfort range. We wound up with 2 greys(drake and hen), 1 ringneck (drake) and a poodoo. Like I said we could have had a few more but we are not comfortable shooting in certain situations and him for some reason shooting lowpower #6 shot. I liked that area a good bit and will be looking at going back there. Just before leaving, there was a boat that stirred up a bunch of ducks in open water. I've never seen that many ducks before. It looked like the videos you see on TV in Kansas or up north. Hopefully during the split I can get a good place to setup and build a brush blind. However I really don't need it because I just back up against the grass bank and use it as a backdrop. My popup blind seemed to work good as the ducks ere 15-20yrds coming in and flying over not seeing us. |

You were probably seeing the same raft of dogree that I saw thanksgiving day in Montegut. They must have easily had a thousand duck rafting up about 500 yards from us. We ended up with a French a ring neck a female gray and a dogree. Couldn't get em to land in my 4 doz deeks when they had a thousand ducks just a few hundred yards away. It's amazing to see that many birds all rafted up like that, but it sucks too! No amount of calling could turn em back once they saw those ducks. Sent from my iPhone using |

They were far off so I couldn't tell what they were but it was a few thousand. They got up, flew around the area for a bit, saw a few small flocks break off and then they'd land right back in open water. I think I pinpointed where they were and will look at heading out to that area in the future. Fewer hunters. Lot's of grass along the banks for feeding. |

Miller how far out is your furthest decoy. Just wondering. I don't know if its because it is a picture they look really far out there but they look really far out there. I am guessing 50 yards. |

They usually raft up around wonder lake this time of year. I have always seen them a few hundred yards away from most land, so you may have to hunt an open lake diver bird style set up. Calm days middle of the lake seem to be where they are. Sent from my iPhone using |
