 AR-15 recommendations?
I am in the market for an AR-15. I am trying to stay at or under $1000. I want something accurate and dependable in a flat top design with a med heavy barrel. I would like a 1x7 twist barrel if possible. Just looking to see what u guys have and how yall like them to give me a starting point.

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
I bought the colt 556 from academy for 1k. It came as a flat top but I added the removable carry handle. I like the old school look and wanted fixed iron sights. I've passed a few hundred rounds through it and never an issue.

These are a few pics of some of their guns. They come with a 1/7 twist barell. You can get 5.56 or 300 blackout.

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
I got a Bushmaster chambered in 7.62x39 (Ak round) and another in 7.62x51 (.308).... no problems except finding good operating magazines for the 7.62x39.... tapered shells need a curved magazine.......

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
The actual receivers from brand to brand are almost identical except for brass deflector and the shell push thingy.... lol .... uppers too are almost identical from brand to brand..... buy a base model and make improvements over time.... I'm gonna get a better trigger for the .308.... it's a dpms, I didn't specify in earlier post.... it has a different receiver for the larger shell..... my next will be an ar in .22 caliber

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
I was issued a M16A1 in the mid-80s that was stamped "Hyrdomatic Division of General Motors" but I had a Colt M4 for my last deployment - really nice carbine. I would go with Colt if in your budget. what it will really boil down to is personal preference.

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
What makes a "good" ar is all the internals....piston driven stage 2 trigger and a good barrel. That's really all you are paying for when you buy a more expensive ar....... then add all the costs for rails and gadgets.....

How much difference does the piston drive make? Just reliability or accuracy?

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
Thanks fellas I am going to do some research as the time gets closer I have about $700 saved up right now and have about $200 in rewards at bass pro that I will use for optics. This will mainly be a hog gun but will shoot light loads for varmits at times . This post was mainly to see if people had any problems or advice to stay away from something. Everyone seems to like what they have.

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
The best money I spent was on a ALG 'advanced combat' trigger! I think it was about 80$. I didn't want a super light trigger, just a clean break, and it works perfectly.

 AR-15 recommendations?
Don't get caught up in the piston thing. It's not worth the money for 99% of the people using AR's. Direct Impingement guns are just fine.
You just can't go wrong with a bone stock Colt 6920

 AR-15 recommendations?
I run a Colt 6720 and an old SP1 and never had any problems. They are all pretty much ok so it's a matter of warranty and which brand you are partial to. Fwiw, S&W always had a good warranty.

 AR-15 recommendations?
You're right but it puts the icing on the cake for a proven platform. Cleaner and cooler running. It perfects the already good. SF units dropped most of the mark 16 Scar's because it didn't really do anything better then the M4 except cost way more per unit.
If you have the bank then go for it. But us weekend warriors don't need it.

I really like my palmetto state armory. Got 800 in it as it sits in this pic. Since added nikon optics and angled fore grip.

 Re: AR-15 recommendations?
There are so many options now it's nuts, especially compared to 10-15 years ago. Regardless, if you really want to get what you want and using the best parts...build it. They are ridiculously easy to build. Depending on how you buy the parts, no specialized tools required. Every bit of an AR15 can be delivered to your door except the stripped lower receiver.
Piston vs DI is a debate that will never end. I don't see a big deal behind piston guns, DI has never failed me for over a decade. DI works and has far less moving parts to fail.
