Saw a window a few weeks ago, it was closing quick so a trip was planned for Friday - Saturday. Greeted by 3-4' waves the entire 80 mile run to the shelf where it died down to 2' with a 7 second period. It took us 6.5 hrs to make the 115 mile journey to the floater which was much longer than our typical 4 hour runs. Arrive at night and got in line. Jigging and landing Blackfin on every drop. I had my most inexperienced anglers dropping diamond jigs and reeling right back up. After 45 min we started chunking and starting our slick. Jay dropped down for another Blackfin and he fell to the ground as the fish made its initial run. A much larger fish on a diamond jig. We drifted for a mile fighting the fish. A game of inches until she saw the boat and made a mad dash and dumped 200 yds of line. Jay through in the towel and I was now on the rod. Not an ideal scenario, the rod is not setup for a long standup battle and so a belt was the only assistance I could use. No straps for the reel which made things a challenge. I put the pressure on and in 10 minutes has the fish back to see color. A huge yellowfin tuna! A few more cranks on the reel and my mate Cody put a gaff in her followed quickly by two others. A few high fives and then we attempted to lift her in. It took three gaffs and 3 guys to get her over the sides. We never put a scale on her but we estimated 100lbs at the cleaning tables. I spent the rest of the night sword fishing as the rest of the guys became sea sick or just plain worn out. Landed another 20 tiles the next morning before heading back in. |

Sounds like a nice trip. How much is the tuna worth in Japan? |
