Was hoping maybe some of the experts on here could help me tell what's going on with this drake.. I've never seen one like this. I'm guessing it is just a juvenile but I'm not positive the only thing throwing me off is the neck and head dont seem like a typical mallard. The neck was longer and skinnier and the head was skinnier than a typical mallard. Any thoughts? It's an old old mallard hen that has stopped producing estrogen. Kind of like old women growing facial hair after menopause

It's kind of got me and my buddies stumped. I guess it's just a juvenile the skinny neck and head are whats throwing me off. Also the white on it's neck isn't a ring like a typical drake. It's hard to tell in the pic but It's just two white dots on each side not a full ring

Yeah I'm gonna go with it was a juvenile, and the later pic was a black hen.

The Ph.D I sent the pics to felt like it was most likely a mallard drake that had its molt interrupted. Very cool pics and thanks for posting.

Breaking news. Upon further review he's decided that Brewer's duck (mallard x gadwall) is the most plausible guess.

Check out the 3rd one down the line it looks very similar. We always been told they are immature drakes.
