 Re: AR Builds
I tried like hell to wear out a couple M16's, built, unbuilt, rebuilt them a zillion times along with M2 .50 cal, M60, .45 cal grease gun, pistol, some Abrhams tanks, howitzers and a few Bradleys but mostly it's all the same... Just changing parts on chit that goes boom! Nowadays it's shotgun, rifle and four wheel drive... The local recruiter can help guide ya into a specialty!

Built several in diff calibers. It's like lego's for grown ups. My 10yr old shot his first deer with a 6.8spc he helped me build this year.

 Re: AR Builds
I've built a couple, but I'm about to get into building AK's I think. They are a little more involved but you can build them cheap cheap from imported parts kits.

It's nice. Pretty good all around. I used a similar setup overseas so I was already pretty comfortable with it. I don't use it as much as I thought I would but it's nice to have when you need it.

No doubt there. My next one will be a side charging upper. But I don't see myself feeling like I need another one.

Oh no, not a SIG brace. . . Woodie, it's a 556. If I do a 300BLK it won't have anywhere near a 12.5" and will be a piston build.

 Re: AR Builds
Just for grins, I'll get a couple pics of my 308lr up in a bit. My current AR 15 is just a clone of my service rifle for practice, so nothing nifty or cool to see there (20", m16a4 clone). My dpms pattern 308, however, is quite nice.

Run this pig for most things. Use it fit service matches with the iorn sight and without the can. For bush a 20 round box mag and a Bushnell red dot zombie optic and the suppressor.

 Re: AR Builds
SBRs are a lot of fun but truth be told, if you're using 55-62 FMJ 5.56NATO ammunition, the range on a 10.5-12.5 SBR where you can still get reliable bullet yaw/fragmentation is so short it's not worth it unless you plan on shooting your way out of an alley or building. (I don't.)
There's a very legitimate reason that the US Army went with 14.5" on their M4. Anything less and the effective range that you give up just isn't worth it. You can get a 14.5" with a pinned/welded brake without jumping through ATF's hoops.
My next build will be on a Form 1'ed LMT lower in my safe with a 14.5" lightweight profile upper.
Walkers, do you want the OAL with a regular A2 birdcage flash hider or with that AAC Blackout flash hider? The Blackout adds a bit, but you really have to run a Blackout, Trifecta, or a Vortex if you want to keep these SBRs from looking like a flamethrower.

 Re: AR Builds
Does NZ measure from end of open stock to the end of the barrel or the end of the flash hider/brake if it is NOT pinned/welded?
Here, we measure from end of open stock to end of bbl unless hider is pinned/welded.

 Re: AR Builds
I think welded flash suppressor is measured as part of but if its threaded ie removable the use the muzzle as the second point of contact. Mostly because you could have an under lenght gun with a suppressor hiding the true lenght. But heres where it gets curly. A folding stock Ak is a rifle as long as an it's unfolded to over 30 inch. same with a collapsed ar stock when its extended fully is 30. If the gun can't be fired when it's collapsed or folded up but over 30 in firing position then its a rifle too. Short shot guns fall under the same rules 30 inch oal. I had a 12inch side by side 2 inchs over legal lenght.
Making you rifle a pistol here is a waste of money. Means you can only use them as a range toy. Those Ronnie carbine kits aren't even considered a gun until you put a glock in them and they are still a pistol then.

9" AAC complete upper in 300BLK, Mega lower, with a YHM Ti QD can.
Also, a Sig 10.5" 556 pistol w/ Troy alpha rail and an Aimpoint Micro in a LaRue mount.

 Re: AR Builds
Or....just use a longer, heavier bullet, like the 77gr SMK. Or any OTM bullet. The Russians figured that out with the Krinkov.
300BLK is only worth it if you're shooting suppressed and at subsonic velocities its terminal ballistics are as anemic as 55-62gr FMJ out of an SBR.

 Re: AR Builds
No, 300 BLK is totally worth it if you're interested in shooting a round that performs well out of an sbr. It reaches max velocity in very short barrels, and in my experience has more knock down power than my 556 does, in a smaller package. I guess I missed the rule where it says if you have a suppressor, you must shoot subsonic ammunition through it.

 Re: AR Builds
What you're missing is that the longer 556 bullets perform just fine out of an SBR. They aren't cheap but neither is stockpiling 300BLK ammo.
If you don't need a subsonic projectile, the longer 556 bullets perform great. Unless your experience with 556 out of your SBR includes firing a case of 77gr Sierra Match Kings into a gel block, then I would simply say that your experience with 556 out of an SBR is limited. However, there is no need for everyone with an SBR to run out and purchase a $1000 upper in 300BLK to have an effective SBR.
The 300BLK is a nice little platform but it's terminal ballistics are about on par with a 7.62x39 or a .30-30. Nice for short range, and certainly an improvement over current M855 and older M193 out of an SBR. Still, the 300BLK doesn't shine over the 556 until you suppress it because the longer OTM 556 bullets are light years ahead of M855 or M193 out of an SBR.
For someone who already has an SBR with a 1:7 twist, the terminal ballistics solution is incredibly easy---use longer heavier bullets, just as the military has done with Mk262. In fact, it's these longer 555 projectiles and their increased yaw/fragmentation rate at lower velocities that shelved the 6.8mm project.
For somebody with an SBR that isn't going to shoot suppressed, moving to a 300BLK to see better ballistics would be the same as not liking how your 12 gauge performs with #7 1/2 shot on ducks, then running out and buying a 10 gauge to solve the problem.

 Re: AR Builds
The ammo cost is basically the same when compared to the premium bullets you're talking about being effective in 556. It doesn't take a $1000 upper to start shooting 300blk, it takes a barrel swap. And at the end of the day, I don't really give a shit about your ballistics gel lab rat stuff. I shoot lots of hogs, and even the cheap 30cal bullets work better than the premium heavy weight 556 bullets do.

 Re: AR Builds
Ignoring ballistic properties won't make them go away unless you're an ostrich. And the cost of the ammo is the same but how does the cost work out of the new barrel?
With regard to pigs:
I live in FL; there's no shortage of big pigs here. I kill plenty of them. My buddy has a sod farm and we do what we can to keep the population down.
I'm not familiar with where you live. Do the pigs live outside? Or are they all living indoors where an SBR with a 9" barrel is necessary to kill them?
Because hunting pigs with an SBR is an incredibly silly justification for the 300BLK considering its other positive attributes.

 Re: AR Builds
When you start to look silly in an internet debate, never be afraid to fall back to the 'Merica, fuck yeah! defense. But I'm going to try to reel you back in here before you go any further off the deep end.
The initial discussion was the ineffectiveness of SBRs with 5.56mm FMJ ammo between 55-62 grains. You said "GET A 300BLK!!" and I responded "Or. . .simply increase bullet length."
The parameters you're now relying on to justify your adoration of the 300BLK, while having merit, are pretty far afield of the initial discussion. And the fact that you've had to rely on those parameters is indicative of how silly your initial statement was. You sound like my wife trying to justify another high-heel purchase.
Just shoot your 300BLK, honey. It's OK. It makes your legs look great!
However. . .if someone needs to increase the effectiveness of a 5.56 SBR, simply shoot longer 69-77gr bullets.
All of the extraneous requirements you've piled on are completely inapplicable to the original subject. But I'm happy the 300BLK works for all your requirements!
