Post subject:  aluminum pirogue plans???

I'm thinking of building a alum pirogue this winter. I'm looking at what you guys would suggest for length and width and side height. Anyone have pics of their pirogue? I got my shop set up to do this and would like to stew over if before I start cutting the alum sheets. Any thoughts or plans would be appreciated.

randy my personal exp.

dont go any smaller than 12' 16" side should be good, make sure you have a rake on it!!! you do not want a flat bottom pirogue. you want your bow to skim the water and the mud just like a skiff. make it wide enough and stable enough to be able to stand and push pole it too.

we make ours out of wood and fiberglass the bottoms. for the oyster shells

of all the pirouges i have had, my favorite is the old wooded boat i bought off a fellow in texas for 75$

it is squarebacked and built like a bateau. not tippy at all.

i'll go measure it for u later, but i could put me, champ, and brake shoe in it and our gear and paddle to the blind. was light and better than any pirouge i ever had. i'm gonna get charles to copy it for me in aluminum this yr if i ever find a job. lol

i'll measure it and post.

Thanks DA I was hoping you would chime in. jpc do you have a pic of your pirogue sitting on the ground to show the rake? I made a wooden pirogue for my daughters when they were little for playing around on our slough. They did not tie it off and the backwater took it away for good. It was as small one for kids but did have some rake. The length and width is of my main concern right now. Any more info would be appreciated.

The best one I have ever used is the chapman cottonmouth. It is light enough to carry alone and strong enough to hold my fat ass. It does really well in 1 inch or more of water. Occasionally I need to use my foot as a push pole which lightens the load but for the most part I can paddle anywhere i need to. Here are the specs on it.

http://www.pirogue.com/cotton.htm

Good Luck. All of the aluminum ones I have ever seen or used were heavy. they were also much larger so I am not sure what the weight comparison would be compared to a match in glass or wood.

A long time ago we use to have a 12 ft. alum. It was pretty dam light and would carry 2 pretty easy.. As fo specs i don't have any.. I think a good flare on the side is the key to making it stable!!

Post subject:  Re: aluminum pirogue plans???

i went go measure it. 28" wide and 10' legnth.

10'' sides. and there is no flare to the sides, they are straight up.
12" sides with 2" of flare would be perfect.

the rake on mine starts at 8', but u could start it at 8.5 or 9' to give u more useable boat.
on mine the rake is covered, so the bow is very strong and u have a place throw a life jacket or or u could close it in and put foam so it can't sink.

this boat is all open, no seats to rob space. and it's plenty strong enough with just standard drop-in framework.

i'd pull mine with the 4-wheeler down the dirt road for a mile or so to get to the duckpond. it's demise was that it got shotup from sum a-holes at the pouledeaux roundup when it was left for a 'buddy' to use.

if u made it out of .100'' material it would weigh 50-60 #'s im guessing, just depends how much bracing u use.

not tippy like a pirouge, and small enough to throw in ur boat or truck.

if u wanted to go shorter, like to 8' long, i'd go a few inches wider with the bottom, maybe to 32''. heck, maybe even 36''.

i'll go take a few pics when i can and post.

btw, i got a alum pirouge with a rounded bottom in the yard, it is a friggin deathtrap. i never did like it.
i cutout one of the seats to make it a layout blind.

bout the only thing it's good for is to ice down beer in at weddings. lol

Post subject:  Re: aluminum pirogue plans???

yes, i like that boat the best 10'x28". with 10'' sides.

the only thing i would do differant is make the rake shorter so u had like 8 1/2' flat then start the rake instead of starting the rake at 8'.

it would give u 6'' more usable boat.

momma says dat a extra 6'' is da devil.

i'll try to take a pic this weekend.

i'm gonna get one made in .100'' alum this yr. might use 1 peice and get the sides crimped. less welding and stronger.

we'll see.

Joel I got a friend that has a fab shop and he can shear ten foot sheets. I'm gonna use your measurements to duplicate one. I'm gonna price some alum sheets on monday. The last time I bought a couple sheets to make my big fish box the guy who loaded told me next time to ask for water stained alum because it was discounted. I bought some eight and ten foot sheets for around 80 bucks a sheet. I'm hoping alum price is about he same.
I'm working on some removeable windshields for my plateboat right now. I gotta fab up a sonar box too. I ordered a new Humminbird 997c SI and it should be here in a week or so. This unit is too much money to be getting caught up in my drag rope and busting off and flying in the river like my Lowrance x510 did.
So I'm in the alum buying business right now. When I retire I will scrap my plateboat out and hope to have enough money to come down and see you.
I would like to see some pics too.
Thanks for your help.

Post subject:  Re: aluminum pirogue plans???

looks like crap but was a great boat. u could pimp it up wif ur own 'flava' !!!!

u can add sum flare to the sides or make it a foot or 2 shorter, but as is it will carry u and gary in the backwater.

the little deck on the front is cool for setting bait, knife, shells on. plus stuff stays put under there.

if u use 1 peice and just have the sides bent, it will be a a day project.

the rake on mine starts around the 8'-8.5' mark. so does the front deck. play with it and find what u like.

I need something like that. You get up above the 250 mark and a pirogue becomes the devil quick. I still haven't tried out one of the Bandit pirogues yet to see how stabil they are. I got a nice Chapman Copperhead 1-man but the 1-man they used for testing purposes must not have weighed a buck 25.

I went and looked at them. They are built in my neck of the woods. But seeing one in the shop and paddling in one on the water is 2 different things.

Post subject:  Re: aluminum pirogue plans???

i use mine alot for holding decoys or crawfish traps or whatever, so a wide open boat fits my use better. that bandit looks like a good hunting pirouge.

put a couple spud pole holes in it and it would be alot better!!!

Post subject:  Re: aluminum pirogue plans???

It is cypress and marine plywood with fiberglassed bottom and sides fopr the oyster shell. 14' long with a 32" bottom. As you can see the rake is almost 5" ( 4 5/8" ) Which will hep you in the water with a load b/c it will lift your front up and allow you to "SKIM" over water and mud easier. most people don't allow much rake which PLOW the water instead of riding over it. I have put alot of weight in it and gottan into places that my buddies with 2 people in a pirogue and nothing else couldn't get b/c they plowing mud.
It lasted me 15yrs in the weather sadly the other day i moved it and the floor broke out from under it. ( it sat in water for 6 weeks after KATRINA) and it just broke last week beyond repair. Hope call me if you need help.
