In the market for a new shotgun and didn't want to exclude the over under. Anyone hunt ducks with one? Looking for experience based opinion's. Thanks in advance.

They're great if you don't feel like you want that 3rd shot. I had an uncle that hunted with one as long as he hunted and I just remember him saying, "if I can't do my business with two shots, he just wins that day and I need more practice."

That being said, I like my cleanup shot

I used one all last year. I liked it and will probably use it again this year. It was fun and also challenge me to be more cautious of my shots since there's only 2 shells

Or if you were that concerned about having 3 shots you could get one of these lol

Seems like you'd feel like you're always reloading.
I love the way my maxus has the speed load feature. Was really nice on the dove field yesterday.

If I had one heavy enough I would probably duck hunt with one. Mine is super light and you don't want to shoot anything I've 1 oz loads out of it.

Not sure if I've just shot my o/u more but I can shoot doves and clays a lot better with it than my SBEII.

Yeah that's what I hate about mine to it's way to light. With a 3" shell it kicks like a mofo.

I used 2 3/4" #6's all year last year in it and it was very enjoyable to shoot. The smaller 6's really really forced me into picking my shots wisely. And before anyone says that's to small of a shell for ducks, its pretty devastating to a duck hovering over the decoys at 25 yards.

No problem with 6's, I've been hunting with 2.75" #7's in some of the tight quarters. I like them for when the wood ducks are blowing your hat off in the woods too. I shoot 3" #4 for most everything else, and 3.5" #2 for big divers and the off chance I get to throw a shot at a goose.

Even though i bay hunted alot last year I didn't shoot many divers, mainly gadwall and teal. Those 6's though killed every bird in the decoys stone dead. And the Winchesters in the 2 3/4 #6 shot are really hard if not impossible to beat at just under $6 a box....

I have a Winchester 101 Featherlight in Pigeon Grade that I have duck hunted with when I wanted to shoot 12 gauge....it was my go-to gun before I bought a Browning Gold 10 gauge. Then, it became basically a teal season gun. I bought the A400 two seasons ago and have pretty much retired the old girl. In fact, last time I took it out for kicks and giggles, I split the stock.....for the second time in its lifetime. I loved shooting it. FWIW, I don't think that particular O/U needed to be shooting 3" mag loads through it. You knew when you had a good day out with it.

Any problems in a boat blind loading/unloading?

Yeah it added a little bit of a challenge but once I figured out what worked it was easy. Either stood up over the blind or if I was hunting on the end of blind I could just turn it sideways in the blind barrel out and it wasn't a problem.

What do you do when you only shoot one? The 20ga O/u I have slings the shells out when you break it open. Y'all catching the good shell in the air or chasing it down on the floor of the boat? Wait for the next group and take one shot? I just don't have the problem of killing too many ducks here in Georgia to make it any more of a challenge on myself.

I've never had a problem with it kicking out a loaded shell. And the ejector on my gun kicks ass to. Gotta be careful with it, I had my face in front of it a few times and it launched the emptys right into my face. If I only shoot one shot its always only ejected the empty and the other has always stayed put no problem..guess all guns are different though

North LA, it sounds like you shoot clays with an O/U and semi auto for ducks. Any problems going from one to the other?

Not really.

But I shot yesterday and took a while to hit. But once I start I don't loose it. When I shot skeet/trap a lot last year it was nothing to switch because I would shoot twice a week and hunt on the weekends.

I'm going to look into the Tristar guns a little. Would be nice to hunt with one that wasn't soo expensive. But I will probably go with a 20ga.

I've found excellent over and unders at pawn shops. I actually bought a Charles daly 12 guage that I couldn't believe they were selling that cheap. Somebody pawned there worked skeet gun. Their loss my gain . I've had a khan 20 guage that was murder on doves. The nicest I've ever shot was a Diana grade , but I'd never even hunt that gun. My buddy received it as a college graduation present . At first I was hesitant to shoot it. Fully engraved boxed. 20 with 28 barrel set . Shot like a dream.

I shoot a ruger red label I had camo dipped and I love it. I put a dead mule suppressor in the butt stock and extended the forcing cones. No problem with any 3" water fowl round.

When I saw the thread title, i thought "take the under - duck season's gonna suck again". hahaha

But, if I was going to shoot a O/U for ducks, I'd shoot a Beretta 686 or Browning Cynergy. Shot both and really liked them.

The light field o/u's don't swing well and kick like a mule. Get you a sporting clays or skeet model if you can afford it. The Beretta 686 or 687's sporting are awesome but an expensive gun to beat up.

Not much; I shoot Med Camps once a year and throw shot at a few ducks. I paid for a membership at Gardner's place after shooting Scott's benefit, but their five-stand wasn't fully operational the only time I went. I hear they have a wobble trap that should be up and running by now. I may check it out Saturday.

Just remembered this is coming up on 10/14. It's a Christmas benefit shoot with proceeds being used to buy bicycles for underprivileged children.

It's at Los Palomo over in Benton. I heard the course is nice, so I plan on going to check it out.

Thing is, it's on a Friday, so i may have to bail out if I can't get free.

Stu I already responded to your other thread but I have been shooting a camo Cynergy for a couple of years now.



I don't care what anyone else says, no auto----none of them---point like an O/U. It took me about 30 years of shooting to buy one (I bought a 28" field model Cynergy last year and the 30" camo one recently) and I wish I had done so much sooner.

Come pick it up if you want to shoot, or come out with me. We shoot Markham at about 8:45am every Sunday AM.

I kill just as many birds with my O/U as my M2. I also like the fact that I'm not pickup up shells out of the water at the end of a hunt---it takes a little practice but once you get used to the gun you can break it with one hand and the ejector(s) will pop the shells into your other hand and you just drop them in the boat. Like anything else, if you practice with it, it's automatic.

I have shot a Ruger 28 gauge OU for the past 5 seasons. I absolutely love it. I kill just as many birds with it as I did with my 12 ga Montefeltro. Actually my percentage of kills to shots fired is much higher and I shoot fewer shells. It has no problem putting divers on the water feet up. As far as reloading it is not an issue. Three of us had a flock of teal come in, I dropped 2, quickly reloaded one shell and got the last bird as it was trying to get the hell out of dodge at about 40-50 (improved cylinder)

My 13 year old shoots a Beretta SV-10 Prevail 12 gauge with 30 inch barrels on the course and in the field. When wading or hunting out of boat blind he shoots a 12ga Montefeltro, Affinity 20ga, Ruger 12ga or 20ga. He is short so he likes the autoloader when in the boat. Other than that he prefers an OU.

I've got a red label 28 gauge I'm gonna shoot a box or two through for the first time next weekend. Not gonna keep it, just figured I'd see how it shot before it gets sold.
