Post Getting grays to decoy
So I'm having problems with getting grays to decoy. I used 50 pouldeau in the front center of the spread; 12 teal spaced 2-4ft, about 8ft to the left of the pouldeau; and 18 G&H grays 8-10ft to the right of the pouldeau spaced 2-4 from each other. Teal decoy extremely well to this spread, even mottles decoy to this, but the grays say F@#K THAT NOISE.

Am I using to many decoys or not enough? Do G&H decoy sux that bad?

put the call in your pocket when those grays come around and let the decoys work for u.

they won't want to hear a call or look into a blind. if they can see you, they will just circle and land 200 yards out.

olg grays are notoriously hard to get to finish.

good luck

If your in a spot they want to be you can't beat them out of a hole, otherwise their a pain. Also in my experience if a single comes down and touches the water then lifts back while the rest continue to circle, go ahead and shoot him. I've been burned many a time thinking they would make a lap and light for them to fly off after a solo came in close to check the hole.

if you see a spot they like to land in, move your operation to that spot. easy to do in the marsh, not easy to do in a lake.

grays like grass.

good luck

Like said above lay off the call all the way or be very soft with it. Stick to low quacks and stay away from high balls.

Your over thinking it with the decoys. Ducks don't naturally sit together and stay separated between species. The coots are fine to keep piled in together real tight because thats just what tgey do but the teal and greys dont need to be separated. It just looks un natural to see 3-4 different species sittin in their own groups in one location, they move around amongst each other feeding and what not.

I like to close my eyes and throw them out at random.

Try setting about 3 dozen geese and as many ducks as you can fit without the boat sinking! Maje it look like a fuggin waterbird orgy out there! In all seriousness though goose decoys will pull more ducks than duck decoys. May be different that far south though.

Best advice I can give besides being on the X is get hidden and if you have a hood on your jacket use it.

I have called and gotten flocks of 15-20 grays to decoy, but it's doesn't happen as often as I'd like it too. Im definitely going to try each of your suggestions and post my results.
