Post subject:  Spincasting Reel that is not junk ???

I generally use bait casters for hard core bass fishing and a open face for the light stuff.

When I have kids fish with me or folks that do not fish much, I like to give them a simple spin casting. My wife and daughter also prefers a spin casting reel.

Years ago one could purchase a Zebco 33, and it was a pretty good all around reel, great for pan fish, small catfish, and general freshwater fishing. I have discovered that the new model Zebco is junk. After about two trips to the lake, they start hanging up. I have also found that any spin casting reel that says Shakespeare is even junkier, and the Pflueger seems about equally junky.

I have never used a Diawa Goldcast but I have read that they are pretty top notch. If they are not good, they sure rip folks off because they sell for about fifty bucks.

Anyone have experience with the Goldcast or have a recommendation for a solid spin caster that is worth using?

Found this article above. Looks like there are some options that I did not consider. The local big box stores do not carry these where I live. May have to get a couple on Amazon.

Why not just a lite spinner? I use shimano symetre or the ukuma stratus in fresh and salt water and they have lasted years

One of the old men I used to fish with out at Caddo growing up never used anything but one of those abumatic spincast reels from Abu Garcia. He had custom, hand wrapped rods to go with them, but he never used an open face baitcaster. He caught a lot of fish...

Get yourself a Shimano Sahara in whatever size you need and you are good to go.
I have been using these for years and they will last a very long time with minimum maintenance.

Some folks just need that which is simple.

We've got a couple of those diawa goldcast in the trigger model that still work fine after many years. They've never been the smoothest, but I'm a smoothness snob. I've replaced bearings in many reels I've owned to better quality versions, and polished various parts to make things smoother.

The Daiwa Silvercast reels suck. I bought two for my daughters and the handles on both have broken multiple times. Maybe the Goldcasts are better.

Get the zebco omega pro
They are pricy at $80 but worth it.
