Post subject:  East Houston Public Hunting Land

I've been in the area for work off and on for a few years now but never did much duck hunting around here. I will more then likely be here for the season this year and was hoping for a little help finding public land in the area. I do have a blind location on the Wallisville Lake Project, but I don't want to limit myself to just one option. I've been trying to figure out what is considered or where is public land in the area but have the fear of ending up somewhere I shouldn't be hunting. Like anyone else I'm not looking for specific locations just general areas to begin scouting. I'm interested in areas North, East, or South of Houston. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Before the question is asked I have already applied and picked up my TX teal tags for this season.

Texas has an annual public land permit , buy it, you will receive a book in the mail that shows land designated for permitted use, its public , It is county by county so you will see topo maps and outlines, Good Luck and Be safe.

East of Houston only thing "public" is the wallisville project (north of the saltwater barrier) and the refugees.

Not to be "captain obvious" but....

In Texas all large bays are wide open and can produce great hunting opportunity....

Sitting on a 5 gallon bucket in 8" water with a spread can turn out pretty cool on Texas shorelines....

Thanks for the replies and info. I'm continuing to do my homework. I just worried about hunting some of the bays or near tributaries because it seems like there are a lot of different water/river authorities in TX and I don't want to make a mistake in missing area specific rules/permits. I do have a little layout boat and look forward to trying it on the bays this year.

I'm use to LA where most of the marsh & water is private property. Is that the case for the water and marsh South of the Wallisville Lake Project?

You can hunt any bay system as long as you are not on a main waterway, dont cross land, are 200 yards from an inhabited building, and your shot does not cross land.

Yeah, anytime you need help just let me know. Been hunting public for 8 years in the bays but lately I've been doing more rice hunting.

Good post.
I am in a similar situation as GenHee. I just moved north of Houston from New Orleans. I'm obviously not familiar with this vast land they call Texas.
The only reason I was holding on to my 18x48 mud boat was to use in a marsh lease east of New Orleans. Now that I'm not there I will likely sell it, as large mud motors are illegal now on most public lands in La.
I've been using my 21' bay more, between trout/red fishing and with pirogues for duck hunting. I wouldn't mind meeting up one weekend to run around and explore the area with one of you local folk. Feel free to PM with any details or to discuss further.
Hopefully I will have some time to explore between work and holidays in NE La. thanks for any info guys
