Post Duck camp is now........
fishing camp. In the middle of each week, my dogs and I take two days off and "visit" the
duck trailer on the Mississippi. We leave early and stop at the Winnebago County Dog
Training area and run several walking singles. It's right on the way. This week the plan
was to loaf (quite a bit), fix the vent on the trailer roof and take each dog on their
own fishing/boat ride trip. I have a Bimini top on the mud rig which means the dogs can
find shade when we are out in the hot, spring sun.

Wednesday, Daisy and I had two nice catches. The first was a 22", perfect eating size
flathead. The 2nd bordered on sensational. I had both rods "hooked" on the split back
seats with the transom as another "stopper". After reeling in one rod, the other just
bolted right out of the boat so fast and hard there was no way to grab or snag it with
the other rod. In all my years of fishing, this was the first time a rod had left the boat
in that manner. My guess is......it was "big".

I made a couple of quick decisions. First, the other rod was cast out to try and snag the
"goner". With the bad angle, this was quickly dismissed. Upping both anchors, I guessed
whatever took it went west. Therefore, I let the boat drift down the cut with the current
and cast back across it dragging the sinker and hook along the bottom. If it snagged any
of the submerged debris, I'd "give up the ghost".

About fifteen casts later......nothing....no snags or rod. Then it happened, some resistance
and not like bottom. In a few turns of the reel, up came the line with one hook snagged in
the other. Pulling line off the "lost" rod, it wasn't long before "my money" was back in the
boat. I couldn't help feeling a bit smug and pleased at the same time. Sometimes when
fishing, ya' get really lucky.

The dogs look forward to each weekly trip which eventually turns into early teal
season.....me, too.

"supper"
