Who would you guys recommend for a softer dog?
At twenty months, Quaid is retreiveing and steady, good manners, and generally by many standards a good dog.

pushing him to blinds and hand signals is more than I can handle I think.
I ask for advice and get so much conflicting information that I feel it's best to send him somewhere.

But he is a soft dog, bold as hell on a retrieve, but gets his feeling hurt pretty easy.

He deals with British labs for the most part.

I made my pup lock up by accident and he had him "fixed" in no time. Literally 10 minutes.

Dad had him train his dog and it is an impressive pup.

this is where we are, I have followed Hillman's puppy DVD and he is doing well, but we are hitting a huge roadblock on blind retrieves.....he just does not trust that there is a dummie or bird there.....

Steve riggins with bear creek on the bayou.

I've heard some bad reviews about riggins and that he can be overly hard on a dog. May want to look around some more.

Pm akafreshwaterkilla he's Trained some nice dogs and has messed with my Boykin some. She's a soft dog and he's gotten good results out of her already

Steve Riggins is close by. Im a pro in Texas and if thats whom I would use in La. for your dog. He will treat you right.

Im sure several others have mentioned great trainers, but I have had the chance to see AKAs dogs work personally. Mine will be going to him directly. He seems to have his stuff together for training and is probably 5 minutes from you..

Whatever you do --- DO NOT take him to Old Cypress Kennels in Kaplan -- Dude is a fucking idiot when it comes to training and will lie to you as soon as look at you

Anyone ever use Tim Neal with triad kennels he has my dog she seems to be doing well I know he quit training for a while but he took my dog and a buddy's dog 2 months ago and they seem to be doing fine not sure exactly what to expect in two months but just force fetch made a huge improvement on what I had already taught her

Second Bobby's recommendation of Chuck McCall.

The guy that trained my last dog always said that marked retrieves are like high school and blinds were like getting a masters. He felt that the dog should be solid on all of the basics up through diversions, doubles etc and force fetched then worked through triples and quads. Lots of retrieves, steady with out question so that there is no question the dog knows what it is supposed to be doing then start with piles or "buckets" then rolled into using the terrain (long grass, trails etc). Some dogs just can't put it together. My last dog was very "soft" and got rattled too easy with even very light stimulation. He was still a good dog and made a lot of retrieves in the field, especially dove and quail, but never got past short blinds.

What breed is he?

we've got a couple kennels up here that breed them, i'd get in contact with one of these breeders and see what they have to offer up for help. i've heard nothing but good things about dave pepe up here, might be worth a phone call. wachtels are a pretty neat breed and as versatile as they come, but they don't necessarily take to retriever training like a lab would. good luck!

Thanks Goosie.....They are a great breed. I know Dave and he helped me find my breeder......LastChance Wactlehunds......I want to be clear, he HAS two seasons under his belt and over 200 birds to hand and another 15 or so rabbits to hand.......

I am having to balance the softness of the breed with his intelligence and my lack of intelligence.

Fortunatly I had a Boykin the last 14 years and she taught me quite a bit about soft breeds, so I am taking this one slow. And cautiously looking for a trainer is part of that.
AKA and I have been on the phone a few times, he is just a few miles from me, knows what he is doing and wants to help me.

We are working on a plan.
