What to look for in a puppy?
So I'm thinking of getting a new puppy to hunt with what are the top 5 things to look for in a breeder or puppy and about how much does a better than average puppy cost?

I don't no much about all that. But when I got mine. I made sure the parents both hunted and I went and looked at the parents first to see if they had the kind of temperament I liked.

Re: What to look for in a puppy?
you need to decide on what you are willing to spend. then you need to look at ped of the parents a high breed pup does not mean it will be the best it will just help decrease your chances on several bad traits hip eye eic cmn and so on. when you find the litter ask about health contract on pup i got a 26 month on mine which is the kinda standered on some working dogs pup (hunt test and feild trail) then when chosing the pup i pick the most out going and nosy/ inquisitive and confident pup. alot of choosing a pup is what are you looking for a buddie a hunting partner or a comp/working dog. if you need any halp or have any questions your welcome to pm me and i will do my best to help in any way.

Wish you were closer. I have two pups to sell out of 6 that were whelped April 5th.

Re: What to look for in a puppy?
Health screenings genetic and other (EIC, CNM, CERF, OFA Hips&Elbows)
Hunt/Field titles in their pedigree (MH, FC, AFC, NAFC, SH, etc.). We're lucky because for retrievers there are tests/standards for our dogs. These tests require intelligence, drive, eagerness to please, hunting/retrieving ability, good nose, discipline and athleticism. It's no guarantee your dog is going to be a great hunting retriever but it ups the probability big time!! Just like the probabilty that Micheal Jordan and Cheryl Swoops' kid would most likely be better at basketball than mine--no guarantee, but highly likely.
Also, look for reputable breeders that offer health guarantees. You'll pay more for a dog with all this, but it's going to be a small cost relative to all the vet bills and food and you're going to have this dog for the next 14 years!
