 Re: Cold water
I don't have a spaniel dip shit. I have a british lab. She has a fraction of the cost that y'all's dogs have. You cant honestly say cost length has 0 to do with the dog getting cold

 Re: Cold water
Your dog is smarter than u. In training u better switch the role or u will be wrapping ur dog in a blanket more than once

 Re: Cold water
Not abt the length of the coat. It's the undercoat that counts. And it will bt develop inside the house.

 Re: Cold water
It's called force to pile. It's Obv u haven't done this w ur dog. This is the method of training that hones in on the dog desire to please. Yes u can actually build that desire through training. U need to work a lil more w ur dog and try some dif methods. Anyone who understands dog training will explain this exactly how I did. Yes ur dog has desire to retrieve. Now u need to fine tune that desire and build around it.

 Re: Cold water
I used mainly retriever training for spaniels from Pam kadlec. She runs the bss so she has the most experience w boykins. She owner and trainer of the top 3 boykins in the country. All w grand passes. I also used a lil from waterdog and building a retriever by Carol Cassidy

 Re: Cold water
I'd like to see some of y'all wear nothing but a 5mm neoprene coat that isn't completely waterproof and swim in nearly freezing water and see how many retrieves you make...lol the dogs cold, hell I get cold with layers of clothes on....... as long as it does well during reasonable circumstances I wouldn't be too worried about it. I mean you can get upset all you want about a dog not going pick up all the birds, but why do we have dogs again? Oh right so our lazy asses don't have to go get them.

 Re: Cold water
Just the reason I did not go with the Boykin. I like them but my research gave me problems with cold water. Here is my lab with a goose and it's -29F that day. Now, thats cold. We hunted 1.3/4 hours and that was enough for both of us. 30F is warm and we look for that weather in late season. Just another perspective. Duckdonsamspeck1.jpg

 Re: Cold water
We live in south la. It don't get cold lol so if I leave my dog out side in 70-90 degree weather it will grow a undercoat. My house stays 70 or lower all year long lol does that count.

 Re: Cold water
More of the wachelhound and the chessie than any other. The temperament is identical w chessies. At least mine is. Seen a few wachelhounds bt never handled one. They are identical to a Boykin. Water spaniels are minimal in this breed line. The English cocker is the spaniel line that is desired w these pups

 Re: Cold water
I have hunted with various breeds that have shut down due to cold and ice. A friend of mine takes a blanket and towel for his golden when it gets below freezing. I personally have had nothing but Chessies and hunted with them when ice would form on there coats and couldnt keep them from wanting to retrieve.

 Re: Cold water
We hunted in some colder water this weekend zero issues. I think the ear infection had her not feeling to well. I got that issue cleared up and she didn't hesitant this morning she had 6 blinds no issue getting her in the water
