Post Pup in a boat question?
I'd like some ideas from you guys with dogs

I'm wantin to go chase some reds this weekend, thinkin bout bringin my 11 week chessie with me. since it'll probably be an all day venture I can't keep him kenneled at the house all day.
He's been in the boat at my house and somewhat familiar with it of course this is while it's sitting on the trailer not moving and doesn't mind the motor noise.
maybe I'm over processing this but I don't want to ruin him from boats..seeing his hunting life will mostly involve one
Was wondering how you guys introduced your pups to moving boats in water? trying to hold onto a leash while boat is underway seems like a bad idea for both me operating a tiller and for him being we're in a boat... I will have his kennel with us in the boat so I can put him up for periods while fishing so he's not always under my feet gettin into bait hooks and all, BUT him in that while underway doesnt sit right with me incase there's an accident..

I know a perfectly trained puppy that doesn't break form the sit command until allowed to is the best way... BUT.. let's be honest, puppies are puppies. just wanna make it safe and enjoyable for the both of us

I brought my young black lab to lake fork one weekend. She hated it hid out of the sun under the console, I had to take her out let her swim in the water and cool her off every now & then. This was September hot & sunny, no wind all day.

I always sat Sadie in between my legs and used the boats side and my legs to sort of hold her in place. For the most part they are happy checking everything out & being by your side. When she is on the boat she walks everywhere she'll lay down or watch me cast but every time the bait comes out of the water she wants to check it out.

When mine was really young, I kept him leashed to the middle of the boat with just enough slack to move to the side but not go over. I taught him his "spot" in the boat at about your pups age. If you are not going to let him swim or if he has not been introduced to water, you might bring a bucket to wet him down if it gets hot.

Just keep them close when running so you can pet & comfort them. Will probably be nervous first couple times out. Best thing I found was have another dog in the boat those first couple times. I can't pull out with the boat without all 3 of mine sitting at the door crying to go.

Now I have 2 that have to ride up front

Also make sure you get to shore every once in awhile and let the pup run/relieve itself while out for the day. My CLF started going on the boat with me at about the same age as yours. She did fine and now gets upset when I leave without her.

My dogs first ride was at 8 weeks old. Kept her in the cabin out of the sun. Shes rode shotgun with me i dont how many times after that. Well just last monday after i picked up my new rig. I took it out on the lake and she tagged along. On the way back i was running a shallow ditch with lillies and a nutria took off from the front of the boat. Well Saige couldnt handle it, she jumped. I wouldve rathered her jump completely out of the boat but its like she wanted stop and she just ended up toppling over the side. It spun her around, hitting her head on the boat. She popped out of the lillies not knowing what hit her. Scared the crap outa me. She was fine after that and probably wont do that again.

How about breaking them of the back of the truck, esp keeping their paws off the side railing?

What I did was stand in my trailered boat and gave gunner the here command. He always wants to be with me but cant jump straight into the boat, so he was forced to figure out how to use his dog ladder. Once he had that licked, I started throwing bumpers out of the boat and having him do his thing. Once he was comfortable with all that I got him out swimming and then retrieving dead fowl bumpers. Once i was sure he could handle water and current. I started him off in the boat. He usually just walks around in it minding his own business for the most part. After all that it was too easy to throw him a bumper from the boat and him retrieve am use his dog ladder with out missing a beat. He's a year now and I am confident he will be on it next season.

Post Re: Pup in a boat question?
thanks again for all the input! lat saturday I took Basin out with me for his first trip and he had a blast, i kept him kenneled next to me while ridin (he has a wired kennel so he can see out) didnt bother him one bit, once stopped i let him out in the boat while trolling. he either willingly stayed in his kennel with his chew toys or by me under my feet. at one point while trolling, something caught his attention in the water, his first instinct wanted to get it forgetting that he was in a boat, he tumbled off the front and popped up swimming around, I coached him with some praise so that he knew he was doing something good and pulled him back in the boat. one quick shake, his tail was wagging then he went down for a long nap lol, guess the excitement wore him out! fishing was super slow so Im glad I had him with me!

took him out again yesterday in a friends boat, didnt bring his kennel this time since i could hold onto him, he was excited to be back out! happy checking everything, stopped at a sandbar for some fun retrieves and a lil bit of swimming!

My weinner dog jumped out her first and only time running WFO. Running through some veggies and a bunch of nutrias running around. I was looking back at the motor, turned around and no dog. Looked back and she was treading water about 50 yards behind. She never did that again. But she will cry at the front door the whole time I'm gone if I don't take her.

DO NOT KENNEL YOUR DOG IN YOUR BOAT -- if you want to make sure they dont jump just put them on a leash -- if something happens and the boat sinks how the hell are they gonna swim in a kennel

Put him in da boat. How is he goin ta learn? I would never tie him in the boat. Teach him his place to sit and you will both have a great time. Duckdon

dont tie your dog down or put him in a kennel in the boat...like brad said if something happens he needs to be able to swim

dog jumping out of the boat and/or hanging himself or the boat sinking in 3 feet of water in the marsh... none of them sat right with me, but I went with what I felt was safest and best.. nothing happened we had a great time! As I said it would be perfect if he had a spot and sat on command in that spot, BUT he was 12 weeks old when I took him out for the first trip in a boat, too many new variables to just trust him to sit and stay. we've been working on it though as I said i took him out with us in a friends boat and he did really well without a leash, he stayed calm and in a spot with no threats of jumpin out.

My dog will jump out at WOT when she sees something that she wants and all the beatings in the world have not stopped it. The worst part is its when I least expect it
