I got two, I hunt ducks, quail, pheasent. My youngest dog at 8 months hunted quail at noon and blood tracked my 11 point that night, over a trail where 40 cows just crossed . He took me right to the deer, I saw it run and fall , called for the dog and a hour later put him on the track , it was drizzing moonless night. They are great hunting dogs. I have trained labs and pointers, now its dd 's all the way. PM your phone #. I will help yopu get hooked up. JD |

JD I am thinking about getting a DD in the future. One question? Do you think they are tougher and hunt stronger, longer, than a lab? I use to have GSP's and they were way tougher in the field than most labs I have seen. Where did yours come from and do you have the contact info for the kennel? Thanks Duckdon Email: safari@gci.net |

I have not seen any DD's with hip problems , they are certified by the german's not ofa . The vet who did my dog's xrays said he had never seen better hips. The germans gave my dog a just a good rating. I think the only problem that realy shows up is a bleeding disorder and it is not that common. Some dogs don't make the breeding program because of teeth. The germans or very big on bite quality. No over or under bite allowed! We had a little female out of my dog's littler who had a little under bite, most hunters would not have noticed it. We had her fixed and she will never be bred. She one hot little go-getter a hell of a young dog, but we won't pass on that gene period. JD |

Buddy of mine has one. Great overall dog but always favors his eyes over his nose on a dry ground retrieve. Any suggestions? |

I won't toot my DD's horn, but she is very good dog. I've seen other DD's like her that have the off and on switch which in my opinion makes the best dog no matter the breed. The DD is separated by the breeding program, that being the German system. The breed is very protected by the German breeders/hunters, even here in america. The DD is part GSP. I agree that alot of the ruggedness of the DD comes from them. The GSP has been bred in Germany for 600+ years. The DD just over 100 years. I have a friend that trains NAVHDA GSP's. He is a professional versatile dog trainer. He breeds GSP's. I would recommend a GSP from him any day. FYI, he has a DD spoken for on an up coming litter after training a litter mate to my dog. I can get you the contact info of the breeder of my dog. He is a vet and been raising DD's in the US almost as long as anyone. His stud and brood dogs all came from Germany. Most from the Erthal kennel in Germany. My dog is also NAVHDA registered. As to the hip concerns. There are some certain breedings that have produced undesirable hips. Just as in labs you can only go by the parents. If both sire and dam have perfect hips, thats all you can go by. I am having my dogs xrays done tomorrow. |

You might look at a Deutsche kurzhaar also. It Its the original German short hair. The gsp and dk are 2 different breeds now. Not saying there aren't good gsps but the Deutsche kurzhaar is a controlled breed just like the dd. I have personally seen both work, and both are great. A good bred Dk will do what a good dd will! |

the germans are true purest when it comes the thier dogs. I have a new puppy that is the Deutsche Wactelhund. Very similar breeding restrictions of not even tougher. You have gotten great advice here. The only other thing I can add is choose your training style carefully. these breeds do not train like a lab or chessie. Not even really like a Golden. there are century's of breeding history in german breeds. do not "untrain" what is already there through breeding. Good luck! |

Not a DD but a GWP....he's 5 years old this year and has been great. Hunts ducks 90% of the time and some doves and pheasants a little. He's even done a little modeling.... |

Nice looking dog you got there. I am on the list for a DD pup and hope to get it this winter out of Minnesota. Will do mostly ducks but with blood trailing bear and moose. Duckdon |
