my names ray and I'm new to training dogs, i got Sophie black lab when she was 7 weeks old from a great litter and she has been the bomb and super fast learner i think, its been stupid easy to train her to do things. We got all the basic commands down and she's 6mo old. Over four weeks ago i took her to the vet to get her front right legged checked out, she had been limping on it and i thought i would check into it. They vet took 5 X-rays of her leg and on 2 of them they found a small small fracture. they said it was probably from a really hard impact like jumping out of the truck or something. I wasn't happy with that, but not much i could do. they gave me some remedol (pain killer) to give her and said take it real easy for 2 weeks, no running no jumping no training. that has been pretty tough with a 5mo pup. i tried as best i could to keep her from running and what not, never the less she still did run and jump some. i took her back 2 weeks later to have her spaded and they took another set of X-rays and said to take it easy, when ever she goes out put her on a leash no jumping and all the stuff. Two more weeks passed and we went back to get the stitches removed which went fine and i asked about her leg and they said if she dosent appear to be in any pain and not limping then its probably ok to start running and training. thrilled with the news that we could start our training back up the next day i threw her 15 bumpers and she did great and was running as if she missed it. everything went great. Today we went out and did a little more training she's running fast and dosnet look like she's feeling and pain and just really doing well. I'm not sure if I'm looking to hard but i think she might be limping kinda? or not putting all her weight on her front right foot? she runs to get the bumpers like the worlds about to end and has great drive to do so, but she shows no signs of not wanting to run. i hope I'm just looking to hard and over analyzing it, id hate to have to go back to no running, but if thats what she needs thats what we will do. ill try and take a vid of her tomorrow fetching and see what y'all think. thanks guys Ray |

Ray I'm no expert but I would bet you may have overworked the pup since she took 2 weeks off? Maybe the stress of the 15 bumpers made the leg sore again. You should ease her back into full training maybe throw a few bumpers and slowly work her up. You want her to strengthen that weakness in her bone over a period of weeks not stress it by going back to full training mode. |

what we did, i didn't think we were pushing very had, the ones i did throw weren't very far and were on grass, i hope its just the leg has lost some muscle strength from not being used as much for a couple weeks, i was watching her a minute ago and she does seem to be limping, but i think its more of a sore limp vs a painful limp. She's young but she's gotten big, she's around the 50lb mark i bet. I'm going to call the vet and some of my buddies that train tomorrow and see what they think. thanks again, Ray |

Do you have water close? Swimming is great excercise & no impact on her skeletal structure. I had a female years back that got soar in her hip @ vet said it would be fine. Said sometimes they grow too fast & it would go away w/ rest. |

Definately get her into some water work. That is some of the best rehab that they can do because they do not put hardly any weight or pressure on their foot. No way should you have to have her going out and retrieving 15 bumpers in a row. I had a similar issue with my lab where she took some road rash from a vehicle when she got away from my wife. I had to not do anything with her for 3 weeks which was hard. She was also 7 months old and wanted to run and play but I didn't let her. When I started training her again we slowly progressed into it. If you go until you see them getting tired you are probably doing too much anyways. You want to keep them always wanting more. There are many things you can do with a 6 month old pup that does not require running and hard activity that you can be working on!!! |

Take it slow on her and let her really get the strength back in the leg. She could be limping even though there is no pain. Not a retriever by any means, but the same thing happened to my French Bulldog and he limped without any pain for a few months. |
