Post Any Bloodhound folks here?
Got this "pup" when he was a hair over a year old, he is still growing at 115 lbs right now and will be 2 in March, pretty sure he'll be one of the 130 lbers. My question is, this silly sumbich gets a spastic burst of energy every night between 8-11 and there is NO settling him down. we rough house and play when I get home from work around 4 and I wear his butt out, but this late night craziness is getting old. Any suggestions? I have a torn rotator cuff so I do have a tough time wearing him out as I'm in pain the entire time, but still hold my own. he just seems as dumb as a stump and just doesn't get that play time is over.

Crate him at night with the door closed to crate. Eventually he will realize it is sleep time not to mention he is basically in a phone booth and no room to play.

My bloodhound, Jamal, just turned one, and he pretty much does the same thing.

I keep him in his crate during the day while I'm at work. I get home around 5:30 and let him out. He does his business, we go for a walk, then he eats, then it's game on from about 7:00 - 10:00. I knock him down, tackle him, roll around on the floor with him, chase him, etc., but come 10:30, he's down for the count!

People have the wrong idea about bloodhounds. If you only know them from movies, you think all they wanna do is mope around slowly and sleep. They couldn't be more opposite. I give mine a pass for two reasons: 1. He's still a puppy. 2. He's crated all day. When I take him to a hunting camp for a weekend he's 90 to nothing, nose to the ground in every direction all weekend long. Come Monday, he's the walking dead for two days straight. My point being: you can wear him out, but an hour or two isn't gonna do it. Good luck and beautiful hound! Tell him I said Happy St. Hubert's Day a week late!!!

I'll give that a shot, I mean he is free almost all day since my wife is home, so its not like he is in it all the time. We got a 75 ft runner outside but he hates to be on it if we're not close to him, the big baby lol He has gone through 4 owners and had a great deal of seperation anxiety when we first got him and REALLY hated the kennel, think one of the previous owners just locked him up 24/7. I keep waiting for that flash the wonder dog from hee haw stage t okick in, but so far no dice. I will kee pthe offers of a new home in mind, he has been riding the fence since day one but we aren't the type to just dump a dog either. Thank god he's house trained, sumbich goes a gallon and the landmines are bigger then my old jack russell terror lol

thats awesome LMAO!

Mudman...if you can remember he has had 4 homes. If you decide to get rid of him let me know. I have plenty of friends that would love to have a free bloodhound him and give him a great home.

^^^ Looks like he is laughing for stepping on her or trying to throw her over that bow rail.

And as for being obnoxious...you sure that is just limited to being a parent?

love the pics man  My wife and I are always amazed at just how far this hamhead can swivel his head around. For a huge dog they sure do seem to be quite felxible, seems like he's boneless sometimes the way he contorts himself on the couch or chair.

You had a jack russel and your complaining about him having a running spell...... For my bull terrier I use this until he drops. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1353013413.672920.jpg
You can throw it farther and you don't have to bend down all the way and no slobber on the hands

I'd have to let him off the leash for that, not sure thats wise for any hound owner. Most hounds I know get a scent and are GONE! We don't have a fenced in yard and we live out in the woods, I mean really secluded. he'd get a scent and the bears would find him before I would lol Yea my jack was hyper even for a jack, but he also wasn't 115 lbs and has a left hook like Tyson lol

Glad you have good luck with the invisible fence. I looked into that but they had a big disclaimer not to use with hound breeds. This is the first dog over 35 lbs I have ever had, so that initself has a whole new slew of things to learn. Like I never had a dog big enough to drink out of the comode, our hoghead drained the sucker dry in 15 minutes lol well good to know they eventually grow out of the crazy phase, but man for such a big dog they sure can go balistic and move fast. I'll have to get his spastic nighttime fits on video, its unreal. Especially when my 4'10.5" and 93 lb wife is his target  Other areas of concern are his anal glands, man they stink. How often do you have them cleaned out? he spends half his day with his toungue buried up his butt, not the most enjoyable thing to see while you eat lol he also has some skin allergies but those seem to have eased off, maybe seasonal? we wash his face and ears daily but he still gets a yeasty smell to him, heard thats common in hounds.

Dwight, I see you got him all wet in that one picture. Is yours a strong swimmer or does he sink like a rock in water over his head like mine does??? Poor guy will swim all day long with a life jacket on, but he hasn't figured out how to make himself float. I guess it could be my fault for naming him Jamal though... :?

Post Re: Any Bloodhound folks here?
I stopped off at a guy's camp a few weeks ago that I'd never met before just to say hello and because our dogs were dying to sniff each other. He asked me to come up and have a beer with the few of them that were there and let the dogs play. About 30 minutes into it, I hear his wife yelling at their dog and I thought I heard her say the name, but I wasn't sure, so I asked. "Shanana!" I was like, "No shit, my dog's name is Jamal!" Well it wasn't 30 minutes after that Shanana and Jamal were both shrieking in pain...We walked about 40 feet from the deck to find them locked up, ass to ass under a palmetto. I knew her owner and I were going to be immediate friends when he looked at them, shook his head, and sighed, "Typical n!ggers..." Best part was, as we were "waiting for the swelling to go down," we made the connection that he was in the process of redoing the driveway at my parents' house that week and the next. My mom called me the next Tuesday, and told me how she was leaving the house during the day, and "the guy doing our driveway yelled at me while I was getting in my car, 'Hey Mrs. McDonough, you know we're in-laws now, right?!'" She thought it was hilarious.

This is my ol' girl, Bella. She is a blood trailing machine, when she's not sleeping anyway. The older they get the lazier they get. They will eat everything when they are young...she ate my brand new set of snap on screwdrivers handles when she was younger. Unfortunately lifetime warranty doesn't cover bloodhound destruction. The other picture is my whole crew, there all 3 in the over-100 lb.-club
