Hate to hurt ur feelings there but there is nothing there worth 2500 it sounds like the 4 months of training was just enough to tell u he wasn't gonna make it

Truth of what? Did you not read the original post? I do not have time to train him...I don't think working him 2 times a week is enough...the guy that trained him worked him everyday and I think that's the way it should be

Thanks kmoppert...the last thing I want is to get rid of him especially with the time and money I have invested but it's not fair to him to stay penned up all the time

if u find a seasoned dog for 2500 u better be careful either somebody in a bind for money or dog aint worth further training but in 4 months of training trainer should have introduced hand signals depending on age of dog at time of training

The only reason I'm askin tht is because that's what Bart said he could get me for him...I clearly stated I was open to any reasonable offers...I definitely do not want to give him away though...I'm losing money regardless of what he sells for if I even sell him

Post Re: 16 month old chocolate lab for sale
Mr Mallard...here is how I would handle this because you are asking a lot of money for a dog. Face value it seems like highway robbery to the naked eye so you have to justify the price you are asking.

1. You have to remember the majority of the audience here are hunters. They are going to want to see the performance pedigree from AKC and UKC. It details a hunting pedigree. Most importantly, it details any titles or championships the dog has in its pedigree. This is the first indicator of the athleticism an hunting potential of the dog.

2. Secondly, I would post any health certifications the dog has. I didn't see any listed on AKCs website by searching the registration number. If the dog does not have any, post the health certifications of the parents.

3. I would talk to the trainer that you had him at and see if he is willing to field calls from potential buyers about the characteristics of the dog as it relates to temperament, trainability, drive to retrieve...all things that relate to this dog in the field as a duck dog that he observed in the four months of training. When you say he does doubles, is that double marked retrieves, double blinds, or retrieves two ducks at one time on his own? These are all important. Here is why: if he went to four months of "gun dog" training the first 3-4 months are basic training techniques to include obedience, force fetching, marked retrieves, decoy passes, boat time. The typical second 4 months of training include the advanced techniques such as casting from blind/boat, hand/whistle obedience, multiple marks/blinds, and increases in distance. So you reference "doubles" but he does not know no hand signals or whistles? See my point?

4. Lastly, you say the sire is out of Gator Point kennels. I have followed Gator Point kennels closely for quite a few years now. In fact, a lot of my bitches pedigree is out of Gator Point kennels. The confusing thing is that I do not see any of the dogs listed in three generations in the working retriever online pedigree database. A LOT of their dogs are listed there. I am not calling you a liar and I may have overlooked it, but if you're going to say the pedigree is Gator Point's then you need to be able to prove it. They are a top 5 chocolate breeder in the country and very well known with a very good reputation.

In closing, right now you asking for $2500 for the dog is very steep without being able to answer the above. You may have put your money into the dog to get trained for four months, but how long ago was that? How much did the dog retain? When was the last time he was worked on a consistent basis? Will a potential buyer have to bring the dog to a new trainer and start with obedience 101? I can tell you from experience that a 16 month old lab, a male at that, that has not been worked and has been kenneled with only 4 months of training is starting to get set in his ways and can be a bitch to "retrain". It becomes a dominance issue.

A few things to think about to help you sell your pup.
